you shouldn't have ants... i imagine you've put some food in there that are attracting them. what have you got in there? anything sweet?
i know this won't solve your current problem...but maybe for the future, have you tried vermicomposting? they are smaller and way easier to move. i know you can't stuff garden waste in there, but you can put kitchen waste and newspaper...
