There's some really good info on the Bummis blog:  http://blog.bummis.com/2011/10/laundry-science.html
First of all, hugs to you!  I had a pretty traumatic time with DD as well (though mine ended in a section..boo!).  It's hard when it seems like nobody understands.  Or they sort of (figuratively) pat you on the head and are like "there, there.  You had a healthy baby.  That's all that matters."  Yes, that's the main thing, sure, but please don't brush off how I feel.  I have a friend who used to be a midwife (she's in her 70s now).  When she heard that I ended up having...
DH also wears DD, and they both love it.  I often can't because of issues with my back, and he's only happy to be the one wearing her around.   I, too, had an unplanned c-section, so DH did skin-to-skin while I was out.  Pretty much the first thing DD did in this world was give her father a hickey on his chest.
Maybe throw them in for one of the cycles with detergent only?  It might be detergent build up on the covers.  Synthetics are more susceptible to build-up, which is probably why it's not happening to your flats.  You might want to hand wash your covers with a squirt of dish soap like Dawn once (make sure to rinse them clean!), and then just go back to normal, but I think maybe just throw them in the wash after your cold wash cycle.    If the ammonia smell is really...
By the way, now that I have read the other stories on this thread (sorry for making mine incredibly long), I really l am especially glad to have found this thread.  I have been nodding and going "yes! Yes!!" to so many of the emotions that everyone has shared.  Though I wish none of us had to go through this, I am comforted by the fact that I am not alone in feeling many of these things.   Also, I had one more thing...I have one of the oddest disappointments about...
When I get started with this, I could talk a LOT about it, but I'll try to keep it short.   I woke up with pretty bad contractions at 4 am on a Thursday morning, after at least a week of being dilated a couple of centimetres.  I was six days overdue at that point, and had fought to keep the doctors from inducing me ON MY DUE DATE.  I had had a perfectly normal pregnancy, save for a little bit of impaired glucose tolerance (but just barely, and I followed a diet for...
I once went to an expensive boutique, not really expecting to find anything I could afford.  Well, I found a 100% silk dress for $40, and it fit me like a dream.  I didn't really have an event to wear it to, but I got it because I figured I would wear it to a wedding, or even work.  It was originally something like $500, and  you can't find a dress like that for that for such a good price!  Well, I got home and removed the price stickers....only to find the MSRP was...
I'd try Rearz or Gabby's.   http://www.nhdcanada.com/youth-suitable-diapers-c-71.html http://www.gabbys.net/   (I know you say you think you've found a solution, but I figure it can't hurt to have resources listed for people who may be looking in the future!)
I just looked in my browsing history, and just came across some ones that were sold out! http://www.diaperco.com/store/c/73-Stacinator.html   But I did a little searching, and found a few available...
I feel like I've seen them for sale somewhere!  I'll take a look at some of the sites I've been visiting the past few days and see if anything comes up.
