Just an update in case this would help anyone else. We had him evaluated by a neurodevelopmental specialist. He said he didn't think it was a developmental problem - just a bad habit. He told us to just ask him to stop flapping. We did "quiet hands" and "we only do that when we're alone in bed" and he has stopped. I guess it was kind of like masturbation - something that felt really good but isn't really appropriate in public. Thanks for all the advice and help!
We're going to have him evaluated but have to wait until November to get into a neurologist. Hate the wait.
Could you post the link to the quiz for pdd? Thanks!
For those of you who've seen similar symptoms in your kids - do you think we should have him evaluated? What would be the value of having a diagnosis? Thanks for your help!
My son will be 3 in October. He has always flapped his hands when he's excited about something - and he opens his mouth and breathes quickly and crosses his eyes while flapping. For the past few months he's also done it to "space out" after meals at the table at home or in restaurants. He sings while he does it or tells himself stories in a very excited voice. We can get him to "come back" to us for a second - but if he's bored he'll just slip away again and flap...
Maybe it's just because DS (2 years old) sleeps through the night - but I find myself missing him and our time alone together so much now that I have DD (4 months). But I am starting to love her too. It just takes me awhile. Plus I think with the second I didn't have that overwhelming "this is so awesome!" feeling that I did with #1. Maybe because #1 was an IVF baby and we wanted him for so so long and #2 was a surprise. Maybe because of a little PPD with #2. Who...
I agree that sometimes the BF advocacy can overemphasize things that may vary for some people. I bf'd exclusively for 14 months and my period came back 8 weeks after delivery. So where was my glorious year of no periods? Didn't get it. And the baby weight just "falling off" from bfing? Didn't happen for me. And it didn't stop me from conceiving #2 - so there you go. At least I was warned about that one by my midwife! Happy surprise there. Not that these...
There is "baby paper". Really crinkly paper that's inside a fabric square so they can't eat it but they can rattle it and chew on it. I got some as a gift. Very cool.
Here in Chicago there was just a series of heartbreaking articles in the paper about a boy that was almost killed by pit bulls that went on a rampage attacking several people in their neighborhood one day - including their owner. They had never done anything like that before. It's absolutely sickening to read about the painful lifelong injuries this boy has suffered. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/s...530929.special (you might need to join for free to read...
I got one. At the hospital where I delivered - and then recently at an activity for moms and babies (that I didn't realize was sponsored by Emfamil.) It was labeled "breastfeeding support package". Huge can of powdered formula. It also includes a detailed pamphlet on how to breastfeed (cleverly filled with not helpful advice and lots of mentions of how very difficult it is and all the problems that you'll encounter) and some huge multi-vitamins for new and/or...
