I am on the RP/Edgewater border, on the south side of Devon.  Glad to see there are so many of us!  It has been several years since I have attended an MDC get together!  Welcome, Kitchensqueen!
Kid friendly cafe rec: http://www.familygroundscafe.com/ (not near downtown, but I do know lots of families that enjoy this place.)   Here is an amazing vegan food truck that can come to you (it is so good): http://stemartaen.com/food-truck/   Here is a vegan dining guide for Chicago: http://www.veganstreet.com/veganliving/chicagodine.html   A bit away from downtown but worth the trip: Sultan's Market has alot of vegan friendly foods:...
I am a bit late in responding, but I wanted to highly recommend my family practice doctor, Dr. Amy Weiler, D.O. I have sent my daughter to Dr. Minkus since she was a toddler, but since she is a preteen and going through puberty now, I feel she would be more comfortable with a female so we are switching to Dr. Weiler. She is my doctor, at both her previous practice and again now that she is off maternity leave and has opened a new practice, and I have never met a more...

I feel a bit embarrassed to say that I don't know when it is appropriate for a first visit to a gynecologist. I saw my primary care physician and didn't see a real gynecologist until I was on my own, but my mom was never very on top of our medical care. Is it after the first period? When a girl is thinking about becoming sexually active? Or just when she feels ready? I know there are midwives in my area who also do well woman care...would it be appropriate to take...
My daughter just started her period (at sleepaway summer camp no less!) just about a month shy of her 11th bday, (a few weeks ago.) She is 5'2" and weighs 85 lbs. I knew it was coming in the next year or two, as she has started to have telltale signs(pubic hair, breast buds, discharge, etc.,) but I have to say it took me by surprise. She has always gone to bed early by her friend's standards, has a very slim frame, is very active and I did not have my first period until...
No. My daughter is ten, and I have told her when she is thirteen if she is interested she can join, but we will have to come up with age-appropriate guidelines at that time and all of her privacy settings have to be set on "friends only." I am unsure if I will require her to give me the password, if I will require her to my friend (if not then definitely she will need to befriend some of the trusted adults in our life; aunts, other relatives or some of my best friends.) ...
My newest obsession is a really young sister duo from Sweden called First Aid Kit. Just saw them live in a small intimate venue last week and I was BLOWN AWAY. Seriously, listen to them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGRG-...eature=channel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDG8x...eature=channel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-JWs...eature=related If you like female vocaled acoustic singer-songwriters, you will love them. Reminds me a bit of Neko Case.
Discharge at 8 is completely in the realm of normal. Make sure you are communicating about the changes her body is and will be going through and continue to encourage the open lines of communication.
I would go with your husband...perhaps solely because if I had a strong reaction about something like this, I for sure would want my partner to stand with me on it. If this boy remains in your sons' lives, there will be more time to feel out the stepfather and decide how you feel about future overnight trips to their home. Also, the boys I knew growing up definitely had sleepovers through high school, they just would call it "crashing out" at each others houses instead...
