it's not free, but my 6 year old really loves http://www.dreambox.com  they have a 14 day free trial...so if anything, just use it for that. my little guy loves it.  hth.

I don't know how old your child is, but we like storynory.com (not books per se, but great stories) & librivox is good too, with a large collection.  both are free.
