Wow you have gotten a lot of good advice. I also say spend the money on a thorough home inspection, so you know exactly what you are getting yourself into. Also, I would pay off the non-education debt asap. And, I'm surprised to hear that your realtor has suggested how much you should offer. Sounds fishy to me. I'd ask her/him to show you some recent comps in your area, usually they can show you what the asking prices were and the final sales price. I'm...
Oh, also, we're thinking about getting snowmobiles. We could use them to move wood from the big wood pile to the house in the winter, and also we are close enough to the trails we could explore and have fun with them, too. I have a friend who has always had a lot of animals, all during the time her kids were growing up. She always incorporated fun things for the kids to do in the barn, like, her swingset was near the barn, surrounded by pea gravel that they could...
I've been thinking about this thread since I first ran across it last night. This is an issue I've been thinking about lately, too. We have 1 1/2 acres, near a pond and woods, which are town owned. I recently read _Gaia's Garden_ and he has some good ideas regarding where to put what on your property. He has a zone theory, that things that need more attention should be closest to your house. It's interesting, you should read it! One thing I remember is that he...

I'm glad that there is one response from someone who does have a grown up boy. Maybe there are more, but...
If the table is wood and in good condition, I'd leave it alone and paint all the chairs black. I know a few people who have done this with mismatched sets and antique tables and it looks really nice! I recently refinished an old 80's hutch thing. Took off the top, took off the knobs. Painted the whole thing black and added brushed nickel knobs that match the kitchen cabinets. It's in my entryway now and it looks really nice! Much cheaper than buying a new piece,...
Congrats to you! You have gotten some really good advice so far, and so I suspect you will be picking and choosing the parts you think will work for you. I have also been in your same situation more than once in my married life. Here are things that have worked for me: ~I have set up automatic withdrawal from dh's paychecks to send a set amount directly to savings, so it was easier for me to live within our more frugal budget. I set it up so I'd have a...
I would absolutely do it if I loved the area I was moving to. Or maybe even if I didn't. I think the key for me would be to make some outdoor living space. Make use of whatever patio/deck/porch you have, make sure you have comfy furnitre for eating/relaxing, something for shade if necessary, and make sure it's easily accessible from the house. In addition, I'd also recommend making an area further away from the house a "room" We have a little area right at the...
We eat them all here. When I cut up broccoli, I cut the flowerettes, then trim off the bottom part of the stalk, then peel it, chop and steam it all together. No one complains here, and if they did, I'd remind them how lucky we are to have food at all. That may not work for you, so if I were in your position, I'd start cutting the flowerettes longer, so they are just eating more of the stalks, and hope they don't notice that fact. You could also chop up the...
I am an only child and I would not like to share a drink with anyone, especially while we are both eating. First of all, it icks me out, and second of all, the only child thing makes it hard for me to share. I would start ordering a cup of ice water with lemon for myself, or I'd just bring a water bottle and leave it out in the car and not drink til I left the restaurant.
We have a sultan hasselbeck and love it.
