I am yet another working Mom with SAHD. Like Mamastar, we wish at times that we could both work part-time, but so far it has worked out close to ideally that I work outside fulltime and DH works outside or at home here and there when he can, and he gets to do a lot of unpaid stuff that he likes to do. He even got very involved and was on the board of the local family center when DS was younger. Not put off at all by all those Moms! Now that DS is 7 1/2, DS is...
I agree with the folks who say do what feels comfortable. My son appears to be finally weaned at 7!!! I never thought we would go this long, but it always seemed too traumatic for him when I tried to stop. I read in a Mothering article a while back that other primates wean when they lose their baby/milk teeth -- well that makes some sense! I suggested stopping when he lost his first tooth, but then he began to dread that wonderful milestone, so I told him that I...
Hello - has anyone heard of getting Fifth Disease more than once? I understand that the first time is supposed to build up immunity and make it impossible to get again, but . . . My ds has what seems like it, and we had thought he had it a couple of years ago too. We thought at first this time was maybe a sun rash or sunscreen allergy (which he has had before), but that doesn't seem to fit so well. I did some research on the web, but I would guess it is fairly uncommon...
Thank you thank you! I had tried searching, but I must have used the wrong keywords or something and didn't find anything, and then thought maybe the conversation had been deleted. I don't know the details of the situation, but now I have what I had wanted to pass along. It is from an earlier post from Becca's momma: "Just for your information, all testing done through your local school district or dept of health is of NO COST to your family (this is the case in...
Thanks! That's not the one I was thinking of, but I have passed it along in case it is helpful. Motherwoman
Hi, I remember getting some very helpful comments from this group a year or so ago when my son's preschool teachers suggested he get testing. In particular I think there was mention of an online parents support group for "navigating the system" and such. We decided not to get testing at that time, but now I have a friend who has done some testing and is feeling somewhat overwhelmed by the system. I was not able to find my references that I thought I had saved away! ...
Well, here's what I found out. Not completely conclusive or anything, but for Tetra Pak, who seems to be the main manufacturer of juice boxes: "The juice boxes are made of three things: paperboard, a sheet of aluminum foil, and the foil is covered with a layer of laminating film. Presumably, the laminating keeps the beverage from coming into direct contact with the aluminum foil." This quote is from an email from the National Institute of Environmental Health...
Hi everybody, I love juice boxes, as does my son, though we try to save them for trips because of the expense. Anyway, I never thought of these handy little delights as being potentially harmful until the following things happened. We were getting on a plane and my 5-year-old set off the metal alarm because he was drinking a juice box! He found it pretty amusing, and the security folks were very nice to him. I never realized the boxes were lined in foil, though I...
Hi everyone, I searched to see if this question was discussed yet, but couldn't find it: What do you all think about the best time for starting x-rays for children? My son is 5 and we just found out that he has some decay between 2 back molars, so I have been reading with interest all about recommended types of fillings, whether or not to use novacaine, fluoride, etc. One thing I am confused about though is when to start doing x-rays, and then how often they...
Thanks Becca's mom! I will check into some of these things. Also thanks for replying about bilingual kids. I was going to say that I have a friend with a bilingual daughter who was also late speaking, and I've heard that this is common and not a problem. But it sounds like Becca's mom has a lot more info and experience than my one bit of experience. Best wishes to you all, MW
