got a free sample in a box of pregnancy tests, it says to use it on CD3, but i forgot and used it on CD 6 (because it was free) and it worked.

FSH is naturally lower on day 6 than on day 3. If you don't take the test during the right time frame (as the instructions clearly and consistently point out), the results are inaccurate. You can get a normal (negative) reading simply because your day six levels are low enough to be considered 'normal' for the expected level on day three.
