Building Your Own Library

In addition to building my baby nephew’s library, I’m always on the lookout to build my own library. As I struggle to conceive, I have immersed myself in books about infertility, conception, and pregnancy. Medical and educational books can be full of useful information. I’m currently reading A Baby at Last! The Couple’s Complete Guide to Getting Pregnant—from Cutting-edge Treatments to Commonsense Wisdom by Dr. Zev Rosenwaks, Dr. Marc Goldstein, and Mark L. Fuerst. One of the things I appreciate about this medical fertility book is that the authors devote space to... read more

today's very important production aid

Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Espresso Beans. Chocolate, DARK chocolate. And caffeine. Just about says it all. Kindie Rock

The first time Liko heard Frances England's first CD, Fascinating Creatures, he stopped dead in his tracks. As the hypnotic first song, "Sometimes," ended, Liko asked, "Who is this?" "It's Liam's mommy, Frances. Remember her?" "Yeah." "What do you think of her songs?" "They're good," he said, and plopped down on the floor. He sat through the entire CD, listening intently. Weeks later, I put on the CD on and as "Sometimes" started to play, he cried out, "That's my favorite song!" Weeks after that, I brought Frances's new CD, Family Tree, along on a... read more

I love Sleep is for the Weak ("the best of the mommybloggers" book)

What a great collection of essays. Amy Corbett Storch’s The Starbucks at the End of the Universe was so my life in a nutshell when the kids were younger. How do you go from having LOTS of time to get somewhere to “Oh, crap, I’m so about to be late and where are my keys?” The inopportune pooping part reminded me of the time that Peter and I, shiny new parents of infant Honorée, took her to Artisanal restaurant in NYC in the late afternoon (thinking that would make it less crowded and fraught) and it was! It was less crowded and fraught. But, Honorée... read more

Halloween Choco-loot

  • by admin

I had a mad craving and ran over to the Chocolatesmith, the Mothering office’s nearest and dearest den of vice: www.chocolatesmith.com. Yes, them. They are our Second Street Studios neighbors. I totally gobbled up a dark chocolate-covered peanut butter mini bar…which reminds me of last year, when I bought a bag of Reese’s Peanut Butter cups as Halloween giveaway candy…because I didn’t like them and wouldn’t eat any. Well, guess what? I put them in the freezer to keep them fresh-ish, and one PMSy night I ate one. Well, I realized I liked frozen peanut butter... read more

Smarty Pants

I get sad when I notice how much cuter clothing generally is for babies and toddlers. I’ll be on a groovy site, and then notice that the sizes top out at 3-4 years old (or younger). But MetroKids Gear is different–this WAHM-business makes amazingly boldly patterned cotton pants all the way up to size 10. And even better: if you happen to be buying pants for your cloth-diapered baby or toddler, the pants are designed to accomodate that cloth diaper booty we all love so much. Win, win. www.metrokidsgear.com Subscribe to the... read more

It's an Insty Staffer Review by Simone Snyder: the GlamourMom Maternity/Nursing Top.

I hear it from my mother all the time: “You are so lucky…when I had you thirty years ago…” and then she goes on about how maternity and nursing clothes were not readily available to her back then; or if they were they were not all that flattering. I suppose she is right. We do have quite a selection these days, but now it seems like there’s too much. It can be a daunting task to rummage through all of the catalogs and all of the websites, and quite frankly, with a nursing baby, who has the time? I recently tried out the new Long Sleeve Maternity Top in... read more
