This is the must have for the serious pumper. You can do both sides at same time. The powerful suction / pumping action is very effective and gets maximum milk in minimum time. It's a must have for anyone who does significant pumping. Not cheap, but for people who pump daily or work outside the home, it makes pumping about as painless as it can be. For me, worth every penny.
The parts that actually touch your breastmilk are external to the pump and can be replaced. Though the package says that this is a single user machine, my sister plans to use mine in the future and will only have to replace the external tubing, etc. They have a decent resale value.
I used this pump for over a year and it was a great product. It is very durable and helped make pumping at work a breeze. The tubing and pump heads are easy to clean. Also, Medela stands behind their product and has an excellent customer service department if you need additional support. EXCELLENT and worth the cost.
Pros
Cons
easy to carry and the bag lends itself to moms on the move
This pump saved my breastfeeding relationship. My DD was born full term and taken to the NICU 4+ hrs away by helicopter. My parents bought me this pump after I had limited success first with a hand pump and then with a hospital Ameda pump. They paid too much because it was sort of an emergency and didn't have time to order online or wait for a coupon. I've pumped everywhere with it. In the hospital, cars, closets, bathrooms, my desk at work, you name it. There is plenty of room in the bag for a baby blanket or cloth, the bottles, and something to pass the time. The fabric holds up really well despite abuse. I used it at least once a day every day for a year, and it is as good as new. It's easy to find replacement parts if you damage yours (although I think this is unlikely). As a PP mentioned, it is definitely not a single user product despite the warning. My ONLY complaint is that condensation gets into the tubing. You can resolve this by detaching the pflanges from the tubing for a minute when you finish pumping; letting air run through the tubes to dry them. Although the resale value is great, I'm keeping mine for future babies!
Pros
Cons
easy to carry, easy to clean, plenty of room to store, speed/strength adjustment
milk gets in tubing which is annoying to clean, side pockets not really useful
I bought this pump because everyone else had it. I had an Ameda pump but wanted the pump in style because I thought it must be better. I don't like it as much as the Ameda. It is not a closed system, so milk can back up into the tubing and get into the motor. On the pump in style, you can only control the strength of suck (other than the let down button). On the Ameda, you can control speed and strength. I do like that the pump in style has a let down button. I also like the bag that the pump instyle comes in, it makes it easier to pump. You just unzip it and plug the tube in. I also have problems with the little yellow connectors that are in the end on the tubing that you use to plug into the back of the flange. They sometimes fall out, and since they are so small...they are gone.
Pros
Cons
let down button, convienient bag
not a closed system, you can only control the strength of sucking
I received this pump as a wonderful & generous gift with the birth of my first baby. I am a WOHM and this pump allowed me to extend my breastfeeding relationship with my first to 1 year despite going back to work at 10 weeks post-par tum. The pump did a wonderful job and was quick and easy to use and dissemble while at work when I often only had 20 minutes to pump. I used this pump again when my second child arrived and it still looks good as new with this extended use.
I would recommend this pump to any mom who is considering pumping or must pump exclusively!
Pros
Cons
easy to carry, easy to assemble, easy to clean, easy to use
This pump hasn't let me down yet! The day after we bought it my five day old son ended up back in the hospital with stomach problems. Thank goodness I had this pump! I used it exclusively for a week and a half until he could breastfeed again. I was able to use it and clean it while staying in the hospital, where I did not have a lot of the conveniences that I have at home. I also still use it at work and have never had a problem with it. I am glad we invested in this pump. It is worth the money!
I love, love, love this pump! I work 3 12 hour shifts per week and pump 4 times a day on days I work. I use this pump a lot! It has held up well...I am on baby #2 and breastfed baby #1 for 9 months. It is easy to use and has never given me any trouble. I love that I can dual pump anywhere I go!
Although Medela is VERY clear that this is a one person item, I bought mine at a garage sale and then bought the horns, etc. new. It works like a champ. I went back to work full time when my son was 10 months, and this pump has done its job! The parts are easy to clean and seem to be holding up pretty well.
Two ebf kids. Work Full Time. No formula. What else matters?

I bought a PISA prior to returning to work with both kids. I pumped so often and for so long with my first (18m) I thought I should save it for home use, even through the pressure was fine when I checked it. It was handy to have a pump at home with no schlepping back and forth. I used the second one until she was 2.
Medela's website has several full time lactaction consultants that answer questions by email. They offered very good advice and even some humor.
This pump got me through some road trips due to its convenient bag and battery versatility. I personally felt like the motor weakened considerably over just a short period of time. Although many of the reviewers at the time said that Medela was happy to replace the motor, it just seemed like way to much trouble - especially after paying such a high price.
Pros
Cons
Carrying case is convenient - Battery option is really nice
While the bathroom was the only private place with a plug, I was able to provide my milk to my son even though I worked during the day. I loved it. The time it took to pump was my break during the day.
I actually bought mine used, used it for a year, then gave to a friend in need. And then ANOTHER friend gave me her old pump when she found out I was expecting again. That goes to show how durable these pumps are! I had a manual pump, but the pump in style is easier to use since I can just hold it on while I'm watching tv or reading. The pump has different settings and even a let-down mode; so, it's customizable to each mama. The pieces are easy to take apart, wash, and reassemble. The parts are also dishwasher safe if I'm not mistaken. If you are planning on pumping on a regular basis, I would recommend this pump for you.
Pros
Cons
Easy to pump, easy to clean, lots of accessories available, portable, long-lasting
I loved this pump (as much as you can love a pump) it was my almost constant companion when I went back to work when my DD was 10weeks old. The bag it comes in is unobstrusive enough and doesnt scream breast pump, everything fits nicely inside - I like the cooler bag that comes with it. It is relatively quiet for a pump and pretty efficient. I would pump every 2-3 hours during the day and twice at night when I returned to work so that I could build up enough supplies for my hungry hungry baby. The pump traveled to and from work with me and on planes etc. It does get heavy to carry after a while. I like that you can choose to pump either one side or the other exclusively or both at the same time, and that the speed and suction is variable. Also it has a good let down pumping mechanism at the beginning. I wished that I could have had 2 so that I could have had one at home and one at work but the big drawback to that idea was price. I have used it for over a year and a half, for my daughter and for supplying some donor milk. These pumps are great, but expensive. The pic below is of my work set up...messy but it worked
Pros
Cons
quite efficient, not too noisy, different speed settings and starts with different pumping action for let down
This is a great pump! I think it's really important to have a pump that you like and that works well... I spend more time with my pump than I do in my car, so I see it as that important of a decision. I also pump for two... some for my own little guy and extra for a friend's baby, so it's doubly important for me. This pump is reliable, strong and very easy to use. The accessories are great and all the pieces are very easy to assemble and disassemble for cleaning. I use the micro-steam clean bags and it is so much faster than traditional boiling sterilization. I do not imagine that I would have the patience or time for hand-expressing and this works fast for me. Plus, all the accessories and compatible bottles make the whole process very easy.
This breast pump kit is honestly my favorite thus far. I have had a few children and have been given a couple other pumps as baby shower gifts but none have compared to the Medela Pump! I really seemed to like this one a lot!
For months I tried to use this pump. I would pump for an hour and a half at a time and only walk away with 5 ounces. It was a very discouraging. So I stopped pumping and got rid of this pump.
I get so little out of my manual pump that when my insurance told me they would cover a pump I got this one and its marvelous. I love its 3 suction settings, its easy to clean, replacement parts are easy to come by, it travels well and it's quiet! Really no complaints here!
If you had to buy one out of pocket, well, i wouldn't be able to afford it!
I love this pump - I got the Medela Pump in Style Advanced Backpack since a backpack fits my style better - It Just looks like a regular backpack, no one knows what's inside or realizes where I disappear to for 10 minutes -
I highly recommend Medela's breast pumps - There are cheaper ones but pumping isn't about spending quality time with your nursing child - It's about getting through your day quickly to get home to your nursing child. (cheaper won't give you the double pumps and that's what makes this so fast)
If you have to pump daily, it's very important that pumping not become a burden - get a good pump that will work quickly - The double pump that lets you do both sides is amazing. Besides that 2 pumps takes half the time, Each side is causing the other side to let down faster (I once saw this with a friend who thought she would be able to nurse twins together - Didn't work cause the babies couldn't drink as fast the milk was coming - but here, fast is perfect)
Medela rates very high because it does it's job very well (even if you prefer to pump one side at a time) - plus its wonderful bags that include insulated cold storage for the pumped milk till you get it home - Just find the bag that fits your lifestyle - I love the knapsack. My friend who works full time in an office with older men who really wouldn't be comfortable even "thinking" that she breat feeds, has the Medela Pump in Style Advanced The Metro Bag It just looks like a large pocketbook (these men have no idea whether it's in style and they would never dream of asking a lady what's in her large pocketbook
