Background: I knew before my daughter was born that I wanted to use cloth diapers. When I was a junior in high school we had to do a report about garbage and the amount of waste caused by disposable diapers still haunts me to this day. (that was 15 years ago so I am sure it is even worse by at least double by now.) I remember babysitting as a teenager for some families that would use cloth on occasion, my nephews the older two had cloth, and we used a lot of cloth in the nursery at church. So I figured I would just get the fluff like that. I had no idea how much cloth diapering had changed in 15 years. Nor did I realize how difficult it would be to find retailers.
Thirsties: I tried to do as much research as possible but 8 months pregnant and no concentration, it was hard to do. From the research I did I found out that Fuzzibunz seemed to be the most often bought seconded by BumGenius but Thirsties consistently got the best reviews by parents who actually use the products. Plus Thirsties is affordable. And even better made in the USA, it helps the American economy and runs a green factory. The more you learn about Thirsties, the more you find about them to love, absolutely love.
Review of Thirsties (sized) Diaper cover: Before my daughter was born I read a lot of blogs that said you need 5 diaper covers and 24 diapers approximately (if I am remembering correctly). I went back to my roots and bought diapers I know: Gerber- flats (4 dozens) and gauze prefolds (2 dozen). I found a trusted (according to blogs and reviews) online retailer Green Mountain Diapers and bought my five covers: 1 Thirsties Duo Wrap in Aplix, 2 Thirsties Duo Wraps in Snaps, 1 Thirsties Diaper Cover, 1 Bummis Super Whisper Wrap. (And 2 Kushies ordered from another retailer).
I did not use the sized cover a lot at first. Shortly after se was born I realized that I needed more covers and bough 5 more of my faves, the Thirsties Duo Wrap in snaps. After two months of age she started heavy wetting at night which required bulky double diaper stuffing to avoid leaks. I started using the sized cover nightly because it allows for bulky stuffing.
As long as I have adequate absorbency on the inside, and I check that all diaper parts are INSIDE of the wrap, then we do not have leaks. I love the fit of this cover. She is now 4.5 months and approx 12 pounds and she still fits very comfortably in the X-small. For night and our bulky stuffing we use Smalls now although I could still make an X-small still fit if I had too.
Using a sized cover does mean more purchases birth to potty, one of the only drawbacks to this cover. That and the fact I hate Aplix and there is no snap option. Aplix is easier for some babysitters though but my husband and I both prefer snaps. Aplix can wear out and it can get caught in the laundry if you forget to use the laundry tabs. But these covers can go over ANY diaper, prefold, flat, inserts, liners, you name it. The gussets still fit the legs well and as long as whatever your choice of fluff is for your little one meets the absorbency needed, the cover will have you covered. And they can withstand multiple changes before needing a wash usually. Cute color choices, made in USA, from a green company that is very friendly and has AWESOME customer service. Seriously I do love these things.
When my daughter turned out to be allergic to disposables, cannot even withstand 30 minutes in a disposable, my Thirsties became my lifeline.
