Nursing 15 mo - Sudden unexplained oversupply

My 15 mo DS nurses about every 3 hours during the day and once or twice during the night. Our routine is pretty consistent throughout the day and there haven’t been any changes to our nursing pattern/duration. Then the other day, out of the blue, I got completely engorged and have been full/leaking ever since. My regular nursing bras aren’t fitting correctly and I wake up with soggy pajamas. I feel like I did back when DS was a newborn and nursing around the clock.

I’m kind of baffled. At first I thought maybe he’s having a growth spurt but he really isn’t nursing any more than he did before. I hope it isn’t some totally obvious explanation that I’m overlooking.

Has this happened to anyone before? Is there anything that could have caused this?

No avice or experience, but have you changed what you're eating? Some foods/herbs increase milk supply.

I agree with the PP. Have you had more oatmeal lately? Indian food with fenugreek?

Thank you for your responses.

I haven't changed anything in my diet recently. I did have a diet Coke the other day and I usually never drink soda but I can't imagine that would cause it.

DS has been extra fussy the past two days as well. I can't tell if I'm making tons of milk because he's fussy or if he's fussy because I'm making too much milk.

Oversupply can cause a fore/hind milk imbalance, which could make LO fussy. I'm stumped, but that sucks. You could use cabbage leaves and drink peppermint tea to help it drop back down to normal. Just be careful to not overdo it...

It might be worth trying your local LLL...

maybe he is teething and not drinking so much, so then it builds up? i guess its a chicken vs egg argument - was he upset first or did you get engorged first?

are you taking any kind of hormonal medication, like birth control pills? i dunno, sounds like either something you ate or a hormonal change, if your LO's nursing patterns haven't changed. weird. i would definitely contact LLL and probably see a doctor too just to get things checked out. i haven't been engorged since DD was quite young, and if i suddenly were now, it would worry me a bit.
