Any other Wendell Berry fans out there? Fiction, nonfiction, or poetry? (Or, like me, all of the above. ) What are your favorites?

The Art of the Commonplace and That Distant Land were two of the only english-language books I had with me for a period of about two years, so I probably come close to knowing them by heart by now just for the sake of having been feeding my inner bookworm, but among essays especially it would be hard for me to choose a favorite collection. Although Life Is a Miracle probably left me thinking more than most of his individual works, and A Timbered Choir is easily my favorite poetry collection.

I just have to tell someone this and my family neither knows who he is or cares so I can use the relative anonymity of cyberspace to share. Yes, I love Wendell Berry - he has been my hero for a long time. I love the Unsettling of America and the Citizenship Papersand I love Hannah Coulter and I love all his poetry especially the Mad Farmers Manifesto or whatever it is. Here's the crazy part. We moved to a new place last August of 07 in his home county. I've actually met him. I would call myself loosely friends with his wife and daughter and daughter-in-law. His granddaughter was in a play at my church that I directed. I haven't talked to him much mostly because all that comes out is, "Uh-uh-uh" But how cool is that? And no one around me understands the freak out factor!!!! And I have to act all cool. And people here are like, "yeah. so? Wendell's just a farmer with those crazy ideas." So I thought maybe you could appreciate it for me. I never would have imagined it. Weird, huh?

Can we trade lives? Or maybe not, since I don't think I'd rise much above the "uh-uh-uh" level either.

I was introduced to Wendell Berry's writing about 8 years ago through The Sun magazine. I need to read more, but I really enjoyed Sex, Economy, Freedom and Community and Life is a Miracle. I'm going to list some of the others that you two have mentioned on my bookmooch want list right now
