Looking for some children's music suggestions

I'm looking for some music suggestions for kids...no Disney or other branded/licensed stuff. Maybe by a folk artist or independent type. Right now ds is in love with the Christmas music being played 24/7 on the local oldies station, but after Christmas I'd like to be able to play something along these lines occasionally and wanted to start looking some now.

TIA!

Let's see, we like Dan Zanes, Ralph Covert (Ralph's World) and the They Might Be Giants kid albums (No! Here Come the ABCs, and Here Come the 123s). Some of Laurie Berkner's stuff is good, too. If you can use itunes, it's fun to buy a few songs from each artist and then make a mix.

Putumayo Kids has all our favorites. They have two different types of CD: there is a lullaby one and a playground one, and then there are different global locations for each. So as an example, we have Celtic Dreamland (lullaby) and Brazilian Playground. (I just realized that sounds like some kind of waxing fetish...never mind.)

It's world music that is sometimes sung by kids, but is always kid-friendly in its themes and rhythms. They have Mexican, Arabic, reggae, folk, etc. I love them and so does my daughter.

I like Frances England. I've caught DD 'singing' a few of her tunes as well, so I assume she's a fan

We have a mix CD full of Laurie Berkner songs. I play it in my preschool classroom too and the kids are constantly singing along with it while they play. I'm ALWAYS singing the songs in my classroom too, not like your typical annoying kids music.

Alphabutt by Kimya Dawson:

hillarious

Warning: there is lots of fart/poop/pee talk. But the songs are pretty AP friendly, IMO, in that bfeeding is talked about and also baby sleeps between mom & dad.

I'm just posting to answer my own question with a few CDs I've found that both dd and ds adore. It was especially helpful last week when we spent so much time in the car!

One of dd and ds' favorite artists is Pete Seeger. He has several "children's" recordings, but they like him so much I can pretty much play anything by him. Ds is actually very sad when we turn off something from Pete Seeger. Some of the ones that they seemed to like the best were: "At 89" and "Birds, Beats, Bugs & Fishes Little & Big: Animal Folk Songs".

Another favorite was Elizabeth Mitchell. Dd much prefered "Little Bird" to "You Are My Sunshine" but Ds adored both of them.

We had to return all of those to the library and ended up with a CD called "Til We Outnumber 'Em: Woodie Guthrie" which was another fast favorite.
