Silly form I had to fill in today..

This morning I took the boys to a playgroup with a friend, just an hour thing where they do crafts and such. As I hadn't been before they wanted me to fill in a registration form. Underneath all the normal stuff, name, DOB etc it said:

Breastfed until: Birth (checkbox) 6 weeks (check box) 4 months (check box)

and that was IT!!!!

Of course I entered in my own check boxes, for ds1 2 years and ds2 I marked it Presently. Then of course I took it to the desk and commented that they needed more checkboxes on the form lol. Don't think they knew what to make of me.

What does "Breastfed until birth" mean?
Oh, that is just ODD.

Honestly I would have expected them to have the 6 months and 1 year checkboxes at least. I've understood that 1 year seems to be "the whole nine yards" for us Americans these days, even if it isn't a commonly reached goal.

Then again, what idiot made this into checkboxes anyway? Why not just a box to write in "length of breastfeeding"? I mean even if they would have been shocked by your answer, who thinks that "length of breastfeeding" is best answered with 3 checkboxes (one of which doesn't make sense ... BFing until "birth"?)?

lol, I assume they mean what most mothers do here which is nurse a couple of days then quit. the wording is terrible. and yes, I agree, why not just leave a box to write in whatever.

We're in the UK and breastfeeding rates are notoriously bad... most people assume you ff.

Why do they even care about how long a mom breastfed or if she did at all?

Really! I've never joined a playgroup but I wasn't aware it required filling out any forms. Interesting.

Oh, I agree! sadly though where I live anyway the health visitors and doctors always asked about what formula the boys were on... then when I tell them I breastfeed they're really shocked. It seems to be unusual here. I only know one person that breastfed for any length of time.

I can't figure out why they would want to know either unless it's some sort of survey but I wasn't told what the information was for, just that it was a registration form. but two of the other mums said they had not had to fill one in.

how sad! the format they use here is "is baby breastfed?" & then "does she get any bottles at all?" (meaning formula bottles). & then they tick the boxes in the little red book... but i found out our breastfeeding initiation rate here is 90%. (however of course that just means baby to breast initially.)

So, are they supplementing their coffers by selling names, addresses, and feeding habits to formula companies? In my experience nothing good will come of a form that asks about infant feeding. Unless by good we're talking formula samples and coupons. Yippee!!

that is so great. I have no idea what the initiation rate is here. When I had my first most mothers in the ward were breastfeeding but when I had my second I was the only one. A couple said they'd "tried" but by the time they left they were on formula.

I really need to get into breastfeeding counselling or something here. I have been told there is a real lack of mums doing it than can help others. the dietician at the hospital begged me to get involved and said she'd send me some info (Which hasn't arrived grrr)

Probably not. They do at least abide by the WHO code here, there are no formula coupons or samples and advertising is only allowed for follow on formulas. (I still want to chuck something at the TV when I see them though)

Don't forget the top ups, you know you do

They always ask me 100 times thinking they can catch me up, one day I want to say, you got me I confess I give her a pint of larger now and then

the BFing rates where i am are dismal too. when Evie was a new born my Health Visitor knew of about 3 mums who BF out of 70 births that year. when Evie was 12 months old i asked her how many mums he knew BFing at 12 months, she said zero. i said well you know 1 now and she seemed shocked but please i was still BFing past 1 year. Evie is 14 month old today. DS2 was slightly over 14 months when i weaned him, i can not see myself weaning evie anytime soon

that form was a bit daft. i would of written under it Breastfed from birth to present day for evie and birth to 14 months for harrison.

i was asked to train as a bf peer supporter, yet to hear anything back yet but i hope i get in

you can try looking up your PCT on the PDF here http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Healthcare/M...tion/DH_085657

Suffolk PCT has no data but looking at the other chart, the nearest to me is Great Yarmouth and Waveney (both boys were born at Great Yarmouth although we live in Suffolk)

Figures are: just over 30% fully breastfed at 6-8 wks, 60% not breastfed, less than 10% partially breastfed.

It's pretty bad but not the worst.
