What are your 7yo boy's favorite toys?

I ask because I feel like we have a lot of "baby" toys. When my older son goes to other kid's houses, they play all day with the other kid's toys. But when they come over here, we seem to have very few toys they are interested in.

I'd like to get him some more older toys this Christmas, but honestly don't even know where to start. Everything I look at seems to be Legos, Star Wars, Spiderman, or video games, none of which he's particularly into (well, he loves video games, but that's not the kind of thing I'm looking for). So, what does your son really like?

The r/c vehicles and the spy gear seem to get the most play with visitors. And the nerf guns. The plastic marble run has been popular over the years with company, too. Ds loves legos but they rarely get played with when other kids come over. Maybe because I hide them so they don't get strewn far and wide.

I make a point of checking batteries before we have company, making sure the toys work.

Play guns, play swords, legos, k'nex, g.i. joe type guys, hot wheels type cars, stop watch, art supplies, walkie talkies, and balls.

What about some Playmobil? My 7 y.o. and her friends love ours.

In our house it's Legos, K'nex, and Hotwheels that are popular. They are big into Star Wars too, even though ds hasn't seen the movie yet. They have Star Wars halloween costumes and they dress up and play in those.
Ds is only 6 but his cousin is 8 and that's what they play together.

Anything he can build with. Legos and K'nex are huge.

My older son has always been hard to buy for. I don't know why exactly. He's not really into Legos or K'nex. He likes marble runs, but we've got about 3 different ones and none of them really work for him. He loves wood building projects, but I feel like I've done that a lot now. He doesn't like Playmobil or other figurine type toys. He really likes remote control airplanes, but many of the ones we've gotten have been disappointing. I just ordered him one that can take off from standing rather than being thrown, which has proven difficult for him, so hopefully that will work out. He really wants a remote control boat, but I have no idea where we would go to run it.

My younger son loves Hotwheels, but my older son isn't as into it. He really loves trains, but we have pretty much every imaginable trainset already.

Legos come to mind first for me. All of my children have loved Legos, even my DD who seemed to dislike them at first loves them now (age 6). Sometimes you have to have a toy in the house for them to learn to love it. I think it's great to watch them build things and use their imagination. Maybe some building blocks? You could get him some art stuff, play doh, that kind of stuff. Does he like board games?

My soon to be 8 year old SS loves legos, Bakugan, Yu-Gi-Oh, play swords, dinosaurs, transformers, walki-talkis etc. For his birthday/Christmas hes asked for a toy dinosaur pet, a laser tag gun/game, Sorry Sliders and Bakugan.

Army men. Science kits. Hotwheels. Nerf guns. Walkietalkie.

Legos. Spy gear. Remote control anything -- cars are easier than planes!

We have a foos ball table that is THE hit of any playdate. Thing takes up a lot of room but is so worth it whenever we have kids over.

Surprisingly, even at 9 he and his buddies will still dress up in knight costumes and play something elaborate along those lines.

He is eying a set of remote control racing cars for Christmas -- combining hotwheels and the remote control obsessions.

Of course, his alltime favorite toy from 7 on has been his Nintendo DS, though you said that wasn't what you were after.

At 9 he has added Pokemon cards, Bakugon figures and cards.
