Good containers for milk?

We get our milk at a local farm which I love. We leave our jars there and tell them what day we would like to pick up the milk. We have used large (1/2 gallon or bigger) glass jars. However, they have now twice broken some of the jars, so I am looking for something better. The problem is that I don't want plastic...

Are there any great stainless steel jars out there.. or anything else you would recommend? Even better if they were easy to pour out of.

TIA!

Could you give them big food grade plastic buckets and then pour the milk into your glass jars when you get it home? I do see old fashioned steel milk churns in peoples gardens all the time but I have no idea where you'd get one new. Dairy suppliers maybe? Must be something out there on the internet.

Hope you find something!

Heres one - no idea how much they are though!
Try searching milk can steel on ebay - there seem to be quite a few.

Have you tried 1/2 gallon glass mason jars? They're pretty tough, because they're tempered glass to take the heat of canning. That's what we bottle our milk in, and they've taken some serious abuse without breaking.

How about getting quart-sized "milk bottles" (the kind they used to use when milkmen delivered milk) and using as many bottles as needed for each milk pickup? So if you get a gallon of milk at a time, use 4 bottles. Smaller jars are sturdier and harder to break than larger ones, plus are easier to pour out of because they're smaller and lighter.

I've been trying to find some of these. Anyone have a source?

I see you are from Conn. I am from NY, and this local dairy sells milk in old fashoned bottles:

You could just keep the bottles. They charge $1 deposit, but just keep them. Or call the company and ask them where they get their bottles.
They may even sell to HFS in your area.

We use mason jars now and used to use old fashioned bottles. The one thing I'll say is that it's SO much easier to skim cream from the mason jars since they have larger openings.
