two questions: placenta calcifications & dilating w/o effacing

So I'm 39 weeks today and had my regular mw appt. - I'd noticed a bit of decreased movement lately so my mw suggested a quick NST and u/s to check fluid levels just to be sure (she's been a little more on the cautious side since I have a thyroid condition).

Anyway, the NST was reactive and the fluid level looked great, but the doc who did the u/s mentioned (by way of showing her student how to read the u/s) that there were various areas of calcification on the placenta - pointed to some white areas.

I didn't get to see my mw again afterward, but I was wondering - is this unusual? I always thought calcifications happened when you were overdue - is it normal to have them already appearing at 39 weeks or is it something to worry about?

On a related note, let my mw check me for the first time - I was very happy to hear that I'm 3 cm dilated already, but she did say that even though my cervix is very nice and soft, it's still long/not really effaced at all, and still quite posterior. Anything I can do about this? I've been using EPO already (orally and vaginally).

Sex seemed to do it for me. Wasnt the most pleasent thing in the world this late in the game, but it definetly helped to dialate me with DS#1, and efface me to almost 100% with DS#2.
