I thought it was an excellent idea.

How much is 5 quid in CAD or USD I've never been to Europe

I think that the idea may come from the fact that you don't get other 'consumables' like nappies and mama pads for free you have to provide your own so why not milk?

If they use the money saved on employing more bf support or on more midwives then that is all to the good.

The ease of access to formula in the hospital in our town is shocking but any moves to restrict formula or promote brestfeeding in anything other than offering it as a choice is met with outrage and before long there is mention of the breastfeeding n****.

If anything this will encourage even shorter stays in hospital that we have already. Plenty of people are out by 4 hours pp and there will be more I imagine.

"...power to the little babies that deserve the milk" (from the article on the change of decision)

If you have decided to formula feed you already know its going to cost money.

I dont expect the hospital to provide me with maternity towels, breast pads etc, I have to fork out for them myself.

One thing I have noticed is people always say stuff about the hospital feeding the mother and that they should also feed the baby too. They seem to forget that by feeding the breastfeeding mother they are also feeding the breastfed child, that is only one meal the hospital has to provide, for the formula feeding mum you have to provide 2 lots of food.

On our childrens ward, if you are a breastfeeding mum you get fed because your child needs the nourishment you are providing. Formula feedig parents etc do not get fed, they have to provide their own food or pay for it, their children are fed by the hospital.

I had no idea it was that bad! Here in NZ you are expected to try to breastfeed (unless there are special circumstances, baby in NICU etc), and while I'm sure you can bring your own formula (or food) and use the little kitchen in the ward, the midwives and nurses are certainly not handing out formula. Instead you can buzz them at any time night and day to come and help you get your baby latched on, they get you Lansinoh for your nipples and offer you a video of breastfeeding that they urge you tpo have seen before you get home. You get booklets from the ministry if health about the benefits of breastfeeding and avoiding formula at the beginning. Oh, and there is no nursery. Either your baby is with you in the ward, or he/she is in the NICU. No-one else will care for your baby, only you. Which is good and bad. I desperately wanted to go home because I was too tired and achey to pick my baby up by myself, and at home DH could help me.

(They do provide you with cloth diapers and disposable maternity pads, if you want them.)

It will be interesting to see what happens with this...
I agree with this.
