I had no idea it was that bad! Here in NZ you are expected to try to breastfeed (unless there are special circumstances, baby in NICU etc), and while I'm sure you can bring your own formula (or food) and use the little kitchen in the ward, the midwives and nurses are certainly not handing out formula. Instead you can buzz them at any time night and day to come and help you get your baby latched on, they get you Lansinoh for your nipples and offer you a video of breastfeeding that they urge you tpo have seen before you get home. You get booklets from the ministry if health about the benefits of breastfeeding and avoiding formula at the beginning. Oh, and there is no nursery. Either your baby is with you in the ward, or he/she is in the NICU. No-one else will care for your baby, only you. Which is good and bad. I desperately wanted to go home because I was too tired and achey to pick my baby up by myself, and at home DH could help me.
(They do provide you with cloth diapers and disposable maternity pads, if you want them.)
