SIDS news in Parents mag...

did anyone else see this in Parents mag? Now they say that you should put your baby to sleep with a fan on in their room because it may significantly reduce the risk of SIDS. It's from new research published in Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine. The premise? Breathing in too much carbon dioxide instead of oxygen they say can cause SIDS so get that fan going to circulate air.
This is a good idea, circulate air go for it, but the other way to stimulate your child's expelling of carbon dioxide is by being next to them! Mckenna has said that in his/their research from what I remember. I think my baby apreciated being next to me instead of a fan. This is so ridiculous really, talk about missing the obvious...

The kicker is at the end of the update, " Follow other SIDS prevention tips as well: Put your baby on her back, avoid soft bedding, never smoke in her room, and don't share a bed."
I,of course, had to do my monthly toss of the mag across the room. I'm so glad I don't pay for the subscription. They have some helpful hints and it is good to see what mainstream parenting is doing, but it exasperates the hell out of me that they never seem to ever give a positive spin on co-sleeping (specifically bedsharing) thus never giving both sides to the issue--especially regarding folks research like Dr. McKenna.
Their website even has more info on co-sleeping that is not necessarily as dire
as the mag purports.
Will they ever get it?

I don't think they will ever get it as long as there is money to be made selling cribs and crib advertising.

On the fan note, I have heard a couple of interesting theories about why the fan helps. One is that it diffuses the offgassing from toxic crib mattresses and the other is that there is a toxic cloud formed when the ammonia in urine meets the chlorine in disposable diapers.

Whether or not they have any validity, I don't know and I co-sleep and will use a cloth/EC combo anyway so neither theory will affect me.

My Niece died last year from SIDS. She was breast-fed, co-slept (she died in my sisters arms). SIDS is such a mystery, I dont think that there is a one size fits all cure. My sister just had another little girl in Oct. and she does run the fan in the room. Whether it works or not who knows but at least it gives my sis some security (that and Addison is on a APNEA/Heart Rate/ O2 monitor until she is 1 just in case). My sis is still leary of sleeping with the baby in her arms but always keeps her in the same room.

Marcee - I'm so sorry to hear about your niece, that must have been terrible for your family If don't mind answering, I'm curious - did she accidently suffocate while your sister was sleeping? Or did she just pass away? Your post isn't clear.

Not until crib manufacturers start selling king-sized cribs specifically designed for co-sleeping.

She stopped breathing. My sister was actually awake. The had just not actually gotten up yet (you know how you lay there kinda half asleep/half awake. It just all happened very quickly. The coroner said it was the most classic case of SIDS that she had ever seen.

Marcee I am so deeply sorry. That is just heartbreaking.

The thing about SIDS being related to mattresses is a theory put forth by a guy who sells mattresses. It takes a little digging to get to the bottom of it, but he wrote the Cot Death book and sells a "special, safe" mattress. I find it incredibly morally reprehensible to play on parents fears to make a buck in this way.

Marcee, I'm so sorry this happened. Our thoughts are with your family. Thank you for sharing.
