Crochet Washcloths good enough gift?

I was invited to my neighbors wedding. We are all new to this neighborhood. I have only known them, ie: spoken to them a few times. I have been in their home a few times. They are very nice and all, but I could not believe I was invited to their wedding. It must be a Southern thing
Anyways I do not have money for a gift. I do not. However I could crochet or sew or make something simple. So I was wondering if some dishcloths was good enough as a gift? And if so how many IYO? I do have some yarn already. Also if I tie it up with a brand new bottle of dishsoap, which I also already have..is that tacky? Ugh, I hate being put in this positition. Please tell me this gift is doable. (well tell me the truth really).
TIA!

I made up a 'kitchen' basket for a friend's wedding. Two cute, knitted dishcloths, a set of 8 home made napkins, a cute home made apron. All packaged up with a nice smelling kitchen soap.

It went over really well, but I knew my friend would go for that sort of thing.

I have received knit dish rags and loved it!

I like the idea of the basket too.Or if you couldn't come across a basket and you had some fabric you could make a table cloth and wrap the gift in that.

Also if you made some cloth napkins maybe you could crochet some napkin rings?

I think that is a geat idea. I would say 6 wash cloths and skip the dish soap. this is actually a prety standad wedding gift from me. I give three dish cloths and a pack of tea towels (the huge white, thin cotton things). but I wouldn't hesitate to give a stack of wash cloths. people love them!!

I think it depends on how formal their wedding is.

Giving something that is handmade is pretty special, and I think that it is a great gift. Adding the basket to it will make it even more fantastic

Definitely!

Yes, I do stuff like that all the time. I often look at their "colors" and then make them something like napkins, washcloths, etc. If you have the yarn, I'd say a half dozen wash cloths would be great if it's that and the soap. If you have the means and can make a basket up, then do that, but otherwise, I think that the washcloths and dish soap are cute, and will DEFINATELY get used. I got, actually, a half dozen wash cloths from a friend when we got married eight years ago, and I still come across them now and then, and think of her every time.

I think the basket ideas are lovely and I wanted to chime in with a neat pattern I saw for knitted dishcloths that I thought looked really nice (I bought a bunch of cotton yarn to make some for myself). The pattern is here. If you are on Ravelry you can see some of the lovely colour combinations people have used.

I think this would be a special gift, especially if wrapped specially too. 6 washclothes in the bottom of a gift bag can be kinda sad. But roll them up, stand them up in a little basket (dollar store, thrift store) with the dish soap, tuck tissue paper over them and into the basket (So you see the basket, but not what's in it) and tie with wide ribbon or wrap it up in a piece of tulle (tulle by the yard is cheaper than most wrapping paper at the craft store, and I use it for baby and wedding gifts all the time) then tie the tulle with curling rubbon - easy and looks like it's from a boutique.

I would also only include the soap if it's a "special" brand (7th gen, ecover, or mrs. meyers) or if it's Joy or Dawn and you can write a cute card (May your marriage bring you much joy, or The dawn of a new family is a special time, etc.) - but I think that sort of thing is fun.
