Can I use a big flannel sheet as a quilt backing? I think I remember reading somewhere that was not a good idea, but I dont know why, and it is so much cheaper than just buying the fabric!

That's what I do and it has worked great!

As long as you prewash/shrink it ( too make sure it doesn't shrink your quilt) you will be fine!

Thanks, I couldnt remember but I thought a lady had told me that sheets were too tightly woven for the quilting machine, maybe thats just for really high thread count cotton sheets, though. I think flannel would be fine. Thanks. :

Yep! I use sheets from the thrift store to back my quilts.

I made a flannel/flannel quilt which I machine quilted ... It did not "needle " well, very frustrating, basically a PITA. But it could still work for you, depends on the sheet!

The top is just regualr quilt fabric (michael miller transportation quilt ), so its not double flannel anywhere. I'll talk to the lady who is going to quilt it to be sure.

I looked up that fabric, and realized I have a few yards of something very similar! Not sure what to do with it though Very nice!

Yeah, I love the Michael Miller fabrics, one son is getting the Transportation quilt and the other is getting a variation of the Fire Truck quilt or a Funky Monkeys quilt, I cant decide! I was thinking of sticking with the Michael Miller so some of the fabric combinations can overlap, yk?
