Breastfeeding Help in Sterling Needed ASAP!

Just talked to my sister who just had her 5th baby. She is 9 days post partum and her milk never came in. She has nursed he 3 previous kids. She has high blood pressure and was under constant visitation and had no privacy during the first week. She has 3 other boys under 6 and one girl that is 14. I think it is likely that she has low thyroid (because I do and our grandma and great aunts had low thyroid) but it is undiagnosed. She is also sick with cold like symptoms and has been for a long time. She says she has fibroids in her uterus, I am not sure if this would affect milk production.

She lives in an area with no LLL and no midwives and doulas. She lives in Sterling, Illinois. I know there is a LLL in Dixon, I gave her those numbers -- not sure if she will call.

Any suggestions of who can help? Any women on this board that can help? Should she start domperidone? Should she be putting the baby to the breast still every 2 hours (I assume the answer is yes to this).

I wish I was closer. I'm in Macomb. There are some breasfeeding peer counslors at the Health Dept in Freeport. They may be of no use in such a complicated situation but they may know of an IBCLC in the area. Here's the list of LLL groups in IL. At the bottom there is an email addy to contact the ACL. She could give more information about who might be closest and give an idea if there are any IBCLC's close by.

Is there an IBCLC at the hospital she delivered at?
Of course she should put the baby to the breast as often as possible but also pump and make sure the baby is getting enough. Even if that means supplement. GL

Thank you for the link - I had given her that info too. Unfortunatley, everyone is 45 min to an hour away and there was no LC at her hospital. She didn't tell me about this issue until 9 days postpartum. She has now given up. I am so sad for her. She is distraught but I am sure there is a medical problem underlying the reason she didn't make milk and her doc won't investigate it -- and she won't push.

There are 3 Lactation Consultants at the hospital in Sterling (if she calls the hospital they can page a LC and have one call her back) and I believe there is one in Dixon from that hospital. I just talked to one a couple of days ago about my milk coming in and she suggessted Brewers Yeast (dh found it at a store next to Bergners in Sterling) since I have bad reaction to fenugreek. He just picked it up today, so not sure if it works.

Can you pm her doctor--just want to make sure he's not mine.

Also wanted to add there is a midwife in Dixon (hospital based) at KSB if she wants to give her a call instead of a doctor.
