Secondhand smoke from neighbor

Thread Starter
Hi.

My downstairs neighbor...who is our landlady's son, by the way - has taken up smoking indoors. It smells like mostly pot, though there was the smell of cigarettes the other day. It's not like my apartment is full of smoke, but I can smell it. Is this dangerous? Should I go ask the guy to start smoking outside? It's tricky since he's the landlady's son and because, you know, it's pot and I feel like I'm calling him out or something. I don't actually care at all what he smokes or when, I'm just nervous that I'm breathing things I shouldn't be while pregnant.

Thoughts? Advice?

hmm.. maybe just tell him that the "cigarette smoke" is getting into your apt and ask if he minds if he smokes outside. I think just as long as you are nice about it, and explain that you're PG and concerned about second hand, he'd probably understand, and at least cut down or be aware that you can smell it might help the situation.. ?

Anyway, I don't know off hand what the effects would be, but if it were me, personally, unless I really couldn't stand the smell or I was allergic, I wouldn't be incredibly concerned as long as it wasn't smoking up my house. But that's just me, and I know probably most people on here would be very bothered by it.

As far as I know, the bad parts of cigarette smoke are contained in the actual smoke. This is also why breathing incense smoke over a long period of time can also give you lung cancer. I would still ask him to stop doing it, just because cigarette smoke has to be one of the most nauseating smells ever, but I don't think it will hurt you. If you are worried you can get one of those air-purifier thingies.

Also, I hear you on being able to smell things your neighbors are doing! I could smell my neighbors cooking through the floor yesterday. It made me want to puke everywhere. I think I definitely would puke if I smelled cigarette smoke!

I can relate. We get the smell of cigarette smoke in our apartment from the people downstairs and it is driving me crazy I quit smoking about 4 years ago and to have to smell it in my home is so terrible. I also worry about all of the effects of second had smoke.
I can assuage your concerns about the pot smoke though. Even though the smell might not be appealing to you, it does not have the same bad effects of cigarette smoke. It is not loaded with toxic chemicals like tobacco is and the only thing it produces is carbon monoxide which, if inhaled, will reduce the amount of oxygen you are getting but nothing else.
I can tell you that we are trying to get out of our lease early so I don't have to smell the cigarettes my whole pregnancy. Wish us luck!

Bethany, you shold be able to get out of it with a note from your Midwives right??? She could say you have severe MS that reacts to the smoke. Your landlord can definitely tell them to smoke outside, but if they don't want to, well they can just let you out of your lease. I personally feel the law would be totally on your side if you tried the old strong arm OR even if you said it was a hardship to move while pregnant and they need to smoke outside!

Good luck!

Good suggestion. I'm sorry you're dealing with this, I would die if I had to smell smoke all day... it's one of the things that makes me gag the most. :Puke
