DD is 9 but devours books and has a more mature outlook (well, as mature as a 9 y/o can be, LOL). I bought these books last week for Christmas:

Rules

A Crooked Kind of Perfect

The View From Saturday

Feathers

Penny From Heaven

She just finished Diary of A Wimpy Kid and Maniac Magee. She loved both.

Oh, and yes to Harry Potter. DD's loved them for years (my FAV too). She also has quite a few Nancy Drew which she really likes too.

However, I've read the Twilight books and I wouldn't let my DD read them. Maybe when she hits 14, at the earliest. Although I started reading the Flowers In the Attic series when I was 11...

The Septimus Heap Series by Angie Sage

I think it's very difficult to give advice for books for a kid you've never met...
She might really enjoy something from Manga section (?) Something like this

Kitchen Princess

If she likes fantasy, then maybe Chronicles of Narnia might be just the right age, and City of Ember could be fun as well.

If you think she'll appreciate the classics, then could be The Hobbit, Black Beauty, Bambi.

Tamora Pierce - strong female characters, fantasy settings. Not overly sophisticated reads, but quite often have ethical dilemmas. My sister and I both love her writing.

Gail Carson Levine - some of her stuff is just awful. Some is great fun.

Meg Cabot - fluffy all the way, but v. popular with that age group.

If you don't mind the oldies, Enid Blyton, Lloyd Alexander and the Silver Brumby series were big faves at that point in my life.

If she likes Nancy Drew, would she enjoy trying some classic mystery authors?

Agatha Christie is the most obvious, and not hard to read at all.

My daughter LOVES the Theodoshia books by Robin LaFevers. There are two so far about a girl who spends most of her time in an old museum solving mysteries and freeing objects from curses. She thinks they're the best.

Also, The Mysterious Benedict Society is an amazing book that we both loved--lots of mystery and cool things that happen.

I remembered another:

I wrote this blurb for Assoc. Content:

Best Newbery Winners for Teen Girls

I wouldn't give "Out of the Dust" (by Karen Hesse) to a girl under 13, though, it's too graphic and sad in parts. Beautiful poetry, though.

Seconding the Theodosia books. Those are great!

My dd loves the Warriors series by Erin Hunter. Other recent reads:

Twilight (I imagine she'll be getting the rest of the series for the holidays.)
The Wee Free Men/Hat Full of Sky/Wintersmith -- Terry Pratchett
Watership Down -- Richard Adams
A Drowned Maiden's Hair -- Laura Schlitz

Has anyone read Larklight by Philip Reeve? I'm thinking of getting dd a copy.

Nothing to add, but I wanted to say, ME TOO! OMG I cannot believe looking back that I was *allowed* to. I bet my mom didn't know what that series was about.

She also let me read Sybil at 11 though, and I KNOW she knew what that was about. Man, that book messed me up.
