6 y/o wants to knit

I am completely challenged in the area of crafts. I am not particularly good at following (or understanding for that matter) directions.

So my 6 y/o ds wants to learn how to knit. He rarely asks to learn anything because he knows everything (), so when he asks, I want to move on it. Any of you skilled mamas/papas teachers have a simple web site or book to suggest?

Thank you.

Nobody has had any experience with this? Or is it just to hard to learn vis internet or a book?

I have a book called Kids Knitting. I think if you don't know how to knit, it might be good for you to find a local yarn store that you can both take classes with. The book is fine, but you really need to see someone doing the stitches and looking at your work to help you figure out where you dropped a stitch or something.

Knittinghelp.com has good videos, and I learned a lot there, but the classes I took were really valuable also. And at the LYS they can teach you about yarn and needles and all the stuff you need to know.

I don't have experience with teaching a child to knit, but I have used knittinghelp.com as well and have taught others and directed them to knittinghelp when I wasn't with them anymore.

Take care,
El

Thanks. I will look into a class. My son would really enjoy the 1:1 time with mama as well. And I will save the links and try to use them in the future.

I suggest getting a kids how-to book, some needles and some yarn. It really isnt hard to figure out, there is only one stich you can make, then you can make it backwards, alternate forward and backwards, etc

I just found this link on YouTube that has a video that shows how to finger knit, with finger knitting you don't need anything but yarn and a pair of scissors and it's easy for young children and you get something rather quick.

and heres one that shows in great detail how to knit.

I'm a real visual learner so these videos really helped.

I hope this helps someone!

some books I like

Hi. Kids Knitting is the book i used to learn to knit, and it not only covers the basics but has a lot of fun stuff in it, too.

These are some other books for children that I really like:
A First Book of Knitting for Children by Bonnie Gosse
Knitting for Children: A Second Book
Knitted Animals

These are Waldorf books (I believe). I really like them because they have lots of toys and stuff that is especially appealing to young children.

Some libraries or yarn shops offer free classes for kids! You can find tons of youtube videos and just learn to knit in the comfort of your own home, too.

Have lots of fun!

I quite like the Lucinda Guy books.

I second the YouTube suggestion. Also, Teach Yourself to Knit, Visually was a huge help to me. It has lots and lots of nice pictures which is so much easier for me to go from than just text alone!

Good luck!
