knitting for a teen boy

My 13 yo dss wants me to knit something for him. He thinks he wants a sweater, but I'm not good at sizing so I'm afraid it just wouldn't look the way he images it. Beanies are an obvious choice, but just a plain black one? Any cool patterns? Any other ideas?

an i-pod holder or a scarf or a hat or a wash cloth?

Or wrist warmers (like fingerless gloves but w/o individual half fingers). That's what I hope to make all my men folk.
