The Traffic Safety Alliance suddenly knows all about infant health and wellness?!?

I'm angry. Like super duper steamed.

My son is huge. If you've read any of my posts, you know this. He is 3 and a half months old, 20lbs, and 26 inches long. So yes, I get it, he's huge. Yes, I know he looks much older. Yes, his doctor (and everyone else) says he's perfectly healthy.

As a result of his size, I realized we'd need a convertible car seat earlier than anticipated. We'd bargained on using his infant seat till he was 8 or 9 months. Well we don't have money saved up currently for a new seat so I was told at my WIC office that I would qualify for assistance from the Traffic Safety Alliance. I called them and here's the (not exactly quoted but very close) conversation:

Me: Hi, yes, my son is outgrowing his car seat and I heard that you could help us get a new one?

TSA Lady: Yes, there's no such thing as a free carseat program though, you have to bring a donation (this was in a very rude tone to start the convo on the right foot.)

Me: Okay, that's fine.

TSA Lady: Now how old is your baby

Me: He's 3 and a half months

TSA Lady: Oh no no no, he's still in an infant seat. You don't need a new one. How big IS he?

Me: Right at or a little over 20 lbs.

TSA Lady: WELL! He is in the obese category and you need to really be watching him because he could have a diabetic emergency at any time! You have to stop overfeeding him. You're going to need to be supplementing with water because he is just TOO big. He's too old for this to have been caused by your gestational diabetes (*note the assumption*) at this point so it's probably infantile diabetes. Be sure you make at least one of his bottles water now.

Me: He's breastfed. (Trying not to scream at her.)

TSA Lady: Well that doesn't change that he's at very high risk of lapsing into a diabetic coma at any time, you need to be supplementing with water. You're obviously overfeeding him.

Me: Mhmm, I'll look in to that. (I want off the phone. Badly.)

TSA Lady: Well you can come in monday afternoon and I'll take a look at him. Be sure to bring a donation for the car seat because this isn't a free give away program.

Me: Okay. Bye.

WTH?!?!?!?! Okay, what do I do now?! I'm sure she'll give me crap if he happens to need to nurse at my appointment tomorrow afternoon. Which he likely will. This woman's job is car safety. What does she know? She sees women with infants every single day and probably misinforms every single one. What action do I need to take from here?

:

Maybe ask her supervisor when this woman started to practice medicine without a licence, as what she was giving you was 1) a medical diagnosis and 2) medical advice - both not only highly inappropriate, but also highly illegal!

Definitely complain! Even if your child had diabetes, a bottle of water isn't going to help!

....holy crap!

Complain to anyone and everyone who will listen! Loudly!

Definetly complain!

We are continuously told to drink water- eight to ten glasses a day to stay hydrated and for the other health benefits drinking plenty of water provides the human body. However, when it comes to an infant, babies and water don't mix. Giving an infant under the age of one water to drink can cause infant water intoxication, which is the leading cause of healthy infant seizures.

Babies do need extra fluids in hot weather, just like adults do, but plain water is not something that you want to give an infant. Babies get enough water from breast milk or formula, giving an infant additional water to drink causes infant water intoxication by diluting the sodium in babies blood and flushing it out of babies body. That reduces the electrolytes in the babies body, altering brain activity, causing seizures to occur in the otherwise healthy infant.

Oh my, she sounds like loads of fun!

Wow. I didn't know Traffic Safety Alliance now employs pediatricians. Who'da thunk.
Sounds like a UAV, and a potentially harmful one. Please do report her (I know nothing about WIC, I'm in Canada, so I don't know who you'd report her to).

Complain to her supervisor-- her advise about his diet is far out of her scope, and a liability to her organization. If she starts in on you again, let her know that your pediatrician is comfortable with his growth and that your only current concern relevant to traffic safety is that he has outgrown his carseat!

WOW!!! I would have chewed her out...with all relative information, personally. WTF! I would report her immediately.

Get your carseat, drop the paper with the quote above (danger of water for babies) on her desk and then complain about her.

You are so right, Flor! Get that car seat first, Tinyactsofcharity. Your baby needs it. Then that woman needs educating.

When you drop the information be sure to say, "No donation required!"

I can't help but laugh at this. My daughter was the same size at the same age. That woman is nuts.

Yeah, get the carseat first and then complain.
Good luck,
Jessica
