I'm angry. Like super duper steamed.
My son is huge. If you've read any of my posts, you know this. He is 3 and a half months old, 20lbs, and 26 inches long. So yes, I get it, he's huge. Yes, I know he looks much older. Yes, his doctor (and everyone else) says he's perfectly healthy.
As a result of his size, I realized we'd need a convertible car seat earlier than anticipated. We'd bargained on using his infant seat till he was 8 or 9 months. Well we don't have money saved up currently for a new seat so I was told at my WIC office that I would qualify for assistance from the Traffic Safety Alliance. I called them and here's the (not exactly quoted but very close) conversation:
Me: Hi, yes, my son is outgrowing his car seat and I heard that you could help us get a new one?
TSA Lady: Yes, there's no such thing as a free carseat program though, you have to bring a donation (this was in a very rude tone to start the convo on the right foot.)
Me: Okay, that's fine.
TSA Lady: Now how old is your baby
Me: He's 3 and a half months
TSA Lady: Oh no no no, he's still in an infant seat. You don't need a new one. How big IS he?
Me: Right at or a little over 20 lbs.
TSA Lady: WELL! He is in the obese category and you need to really be watching him because he could have a diabetic emergency at any time! You have to stop overfeeding him. You're going to need to be supplementing with water because he is just TOO big. He's too old for this to have been caused by your gestational diabetes (*note the assumption*) at this point so it's probably infantile diabetes. Be sure you make at least one of his bottles water now.
Me: He's breastfed. (Trying not to scream at her.)
TSA Lady: Well that doesn't change that he's at very high risk of lapsing into a diabetic coma at any time, you need to be supplementing with water. You're obviously overfeeding him.
Me: Mhmm, I'll look in to that. (I want off the phone. Badly.)
TSA Lady: Well you can come in monday afternoon and I'll take a look at him. Be sure to bring a donation for the car seat because this isn't a free give away program.
Me: Okay. Bye.
WTH?!?!?!?! Okay, what do I do now?! I'm sure she'll give me crap if he happens to need to nurse at my appointment tomorrow afternoon. Which he likely will. This woman's job is car safety. What does she know? She sees women with infants every single day and probably misinforms every single one. What action do I need to take from here?
