raw eggs?

So my in-laws have a pie contest every year for thanksgiving, I just found a great pie recipe and then I realized it has raw egg whites in it. Are you avoiding raw eggs during your pregnancy? Is that old advice? I'm not going to be the only preggo there, I'm not sure if SIL is avoiding raw eggs either.

I always avoid raw eggs. But only because we get our eggs from our chickens and I see what is all over the shells before I wash them :-X LOL *yuck*

Just to be on the safe side though, I'd avoid them.

Can you make the recipe with coddled egg whites? It's what I do when I make caesar dressing.

I'll eat raw eggs in recipes but I know exactly where my eggs come from. If I were buying eggs from a grocery store, I wouldn't risk it.

I would avoid raw eggs myself. However, you can buy powdered egg whites at the grocery store (in the baking section) and they are completely safe because they have been pasteurized. What are the egg whites for? If I know, I can recommend substitutes.

eggs from the grocery store have been pasteurized as well.

Personally, I don't worry about things like that!

Hmm, it looks like you have to use the raw yolks as well. I would probably avoid it, especially because you won't be the only pregnant person there. It does look like a yummy pie. If you still want to make it, just use the raw eggs and don't eat the pie. Since it's a pie contest, I'm guessing there will be other pies there. I have some great pie recipes if you want other options (I'm a baking fanatic), including a s'mores pie...

Coddling eggs is submersing them briefly in hot, but not quite boiling water.

It's likely they might not work for your recipe. http://www.ochef.com/447.htm

It is possible to find pasteurized eggs. . they can be difficult to find.

Dang, didn't notice the yolks too. If you have any good gluten free pie ideas I'd love to hear em. One of the reasons I was attracted to this one was that I wouldn't have to do any substitutions
