Need a little help with this felted coaster/needle felting

Hi, I'm sure this has a simple answer but my searches about needle felting all turn up sculpture-type stuff and that's not really what this is.
I'm looking at this free pattern:

It is a plain knitted and then felted square coaster, no brainer. Then it has a little line design on it and the pattern mentions needle felting to accomplish this.
Would I need to use roving for this (which I don't have) or can I use regular wool yarn I already have? How do they make the lines so straight?

TIA for any help/links to this use of the needle felting technique!!

The needle felting uses scraps of wool yarn. Did you take a look at the free pattern? Using yarn for the needle felting allows for finer lines, I think.

OK, I went back and took a closer look. I thought the initial pattern page I got to WAS the pattern--totally missed the "download pdf" button which reveals--shocking--the pattern.

Whoops.

Can I plead preggo brain? I made it 12 weeks without having to use that excuse yet.

It's super-easy. I used yarn for the designs. BTW, I made the set shown in the second picture down on the pattern page (with the spirals, heart and Christmas tree)!
