Baby Catcher

I just finished reading Baby Catcher what a great book! Any other book suggestions that have to do with pregnancy and birth that is not a week by week or technical text book?

I also loved baby catcher!

Disclaimer, I read a lot, and I enjoy books that I don't agree with if they are funny or well written..

Skinny Bitch, Bun in the Oven...umm, I will NEVER become vegan, but it has funny parts!

Girlfriends guide to pregnancy, the first year, toddlers.... They are funny.

Belly laughs- yes, she says negative things about not circumcisizing, and there is no real information, but it is a quick light read!

LOL, it's so funny what other crunchy moms can get over and I can't. I hated girlfriends guide because it was just so negative towards anyone who wanted to birth without meds, sleep with their baby and breastfeeding was really really downplayed. I was pissed when I finished reading it. Same with Jenny McCarthy, she didn't even try to breastfeed. She is kinda funny, but that girl leaves me so torn!

I read Jenny McCarthy's book during my last pregnancy and it was mostly funny, up until the end...then it was just sad. One book that I highly recommend is Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. The birth stories in the beginning are very uplifting and I learned so much from the second section.

Im reading Jenny's book right now and its hilarious!! I might not agree with every thing she does but its not often I am laughing out loud for my entire metro ride!

Have you read the Red Tent? Its fiction but its all about births. If you tend to get nervous about things I might skip it though because it not all happy ending births.

Ina May's Guide to Childbirth is great for the birth stories, also some other good info in there. So That's What They're For is a really good, down to Earth breastfeeding book. I think she does an awesome job of appealing to a really wide audience in order to encourage breastfeeding. I think most of the funny reads tend to be too mainstream for my tastes. I'm not a Bradley person but the Bradley Guide to Childbirth is pretty awesome at explaining the mechanics of labor and birth in a way you can really understand, also has some good birth stories.

Very similar to Baby Catcher (but even better ino) is A Midwife's Story by Penny Armstrong and Sheryl Feldman. This is a terrific book.

I really like Baby Catcher, its such a great mix of one personal journey, and all the birth stories. I'm not sure I'd reccommend it to someone currently pregnant, though, just because there are a few births that are disturbing-- it's not just the happy ones. At least for me, that stuff really bothers me when I'm pregnant.

I would reccommend Our Babies, Ourselves as a non-instructional book about parenting. It's basically, "how we were meant as a species to parent, how other cultures around the world parent their babies."

Seconding Our Babies, Ourselves and The Red Tent.

A good novel about a midwife is The Birth House, which came out a couple of years ago.

I really enjoyed Baby Catcher while I was pregnant. I don't mind reading about bad outcomes while pregnant, though. I also enjoyed Baby ER, in which a journalist followed a group of babies, parents and doctors through the NICU. I'm not very sensitive about that kind of thing and I found it fascinating.

Louise Erdrich's The Blue Jay's Dance is a lovely year-long birth journal which covers a lot of topics in addition to pregnancy and childbirth.

Waiting for Birdy by Catherine Newman is a really funny account of her pregnancy with her second child. Her descriptions of her toddler son are so sweet, touching and hilarious.

I'll second "The Birth House" (Ami McKay), which is an awesome book. I've read it more than once, actually, which is my evaluation tool for really good stories.
