I'm looking for suggestions. Are there any that have really inspired you, challenged you, etc... ?

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding

The Dr. Sears book ( can't remember the title)

Raising Your Child to be a Mensch

The Birth Order Book

The Hurried Child

It's a bit hard for me to remember. My kids are way older now and I've given away most of my parenting books.

I took Developmental Psychology in college and found it really helpful when I became a parent.

The Sleep Book by Dr. Sears. It really helped me understand night time parenting and why babies don't sleep through the night. I read it when I was pregnant and it really helped me feel that DD was normal in needing me at night. It also helped me not be afraid to co-sleep and it taught me how to set up a safe bed.

"Positive Parenting" by R' Abraham Twerski.

And the several Faber & Maslich books, "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen, and Listen So Kids Will Talk" and "Siblings Without Rivalry/How to Help Your Children Live Together So You Can Live, Too." Absolute classics.

And "Blessings of a Broken Heart" by Sherri Mandell, which isn't actually a parenting book, it's the memoir of a mother whose 13yo son was murdered ... but all through it, the experience of finding strength and energy to continue to parent the rest of her children, just mindblowing, and there were so many lessons in it just in re connecting to your kids and playing with your kids and being totally in the moment with your kids has to be NOW because there is no other time to do it. It has to be RIGHT NOW.

Yes, Your Teenager is Crazy, a scary title, but an excellent advice. Helped me so much with dsd.

The Continuum Concept gave me a different perspective on parenting.

Hands down the book that has made me a better parent is Protecting The Gift by Gavin De Becker.

It's about keeping our children safe from predators, abusive people be it other family members, babysitters, teachers, even their own friends. It's a great book and really worth reading. A bit chilling at times but you learn to trust yourself and you learn so much about what you CAN do to keep your child safe in an increasingly troubled world. For example, he teaches you to tell children that when they are lost they should seek out someone, preferably a woman, a mom with kids would be great, for help, not a security guard and not a man. The reason being women are more likely to be helpful and more likely to stay with the child until the parents are found, and that when a child chooses someone he is less likely to be victimized than when someone else chooses him.

That book helped you? I remember my mother reading that when I was a teen (not that long ago), and maybe it's just the way she introduced it, but she made it sound really insulting and condescending.

Hold On To Your Kids (sorry, forget the author at the moment) connected a lot of dots for me, in terms of maintaining a healthy parent/child connection in this society with so many forces interfering with that.
