I saw ad in my newspaper that they are trialing a new flu vax that isn't egg based.

Ofcoarse I'm just going to run right down there and sign up for THAT study!

My thought when seeing the ad was "Great, so if we thought we could get out of the flu shot by saying there were egg allergies - they'll just inject you with this new one that has no telling WHAT in it!"

No idea if this is the one you're talking about...but, DH and I talked to a guy on a plane who's working on an egg-free flu vax. It's grown on some sort of insect (sounds weird, but not as gross as some of them!)...and has no aluminum or any adjuvant (as I understood it). It sounded like he had not fully vaccinated his young daughter, but I can't be sure. He stated that they believed the vax could be created more quickly since the egg cultures take forever, so the vax could match the strains more closely.

Anyway, I'm not saying anyone should rush out and be a guinea pig (or that this is better than not vaccinating), but at least there's an effort being made in some quarters to avoid aluminum, mercury, etc. But, we might have just met a nice guy; and, someone who researches (with a child) probably looks at things differently than someone on the money end, I would imagine.

Eggs are way, way done on the list of things I am concerned about when it comes to vax!

The only "benefit" that we've found from dealing with egg allergy at our house is the excuse it gives us not to get our kids the flu shot.
