I read in themes, and now I'm on the theme of presidents and first ladies. I'd like to read a biography of each president and each first lady.
I've got one each for George and Martha; they are both OK. George's is a little dry, and I think the author of the Martha Washington bio worships her--I've no doubt there is a small altar at which sacrifices are made in this woman's basement. Neither of them are terribly well written.
Sooo, I'm looking for recommendations from you all. I want something that, while concentrating on their time in the white house, also speaks of their life before and after the presidency. I'd like separate books for each president and first lady. I'd prefer nothing longer than 400 pages, but not a 50 pager, either. I'd also prefer something written within the last 10-15 years. I'd like something that doesn't read like a textbook. It doesn't have to overdramatize events, but I'd just like it to be well written and not so fixated on dates. Does that make sense?
I'm picky, I know. If you all have read any good books about a president or his first lady, I'd like to hear your recommendations.
