Can DD get the flu from BIL's flumist?

Maybe this is a stupid question.
But DD spent HOURS tonight reading with my BIL. At the end of the evening, it came out that he had been vaxed with Flumist about 30 min. before we got there. She was sitting on his lap, kissing him, etc. all evening.

I found this on the CDC website:

"Can people receiving the nasal-spray flu vaccine LAIV (FluMist®) pass the vaccine viruses to others?

In clinical studies, transmission of vaccine viruses to close contacts has occurred only rarely. The current estimated risk of getting infected with vaccine virus after close contact with a person vaccinated with the nasal-spray flu vaccine is low (0.6%-2.4%). Because the viruses are weakened, infection is unlikely to result in influenza illness symptoms since the vaccine viruses have not been shown to mutate into typical or naturally occurring influenza viruses."

...but, gee whiz, for some reason I don't totally buy it.

Please, please, please alleviate my fears. We have several immunocompromised people who are in our lives on a daily basis, and while I'm sure DD and DH and I would make it through a bout of the flu, I'm not sure if all of them would.

Flumist is a live virus. How much they weaken it I'm not sure but as any live virus it can spread to other people. :
People don't realize it and no one tells them. Better load up on some SA and D.

I'm a nurse and I used to work in an Immunology clinic with kiddos who were all immuno-compromised. The MD there wouldn't allow us to get the flumist (insisted on the shot) because it's a live virus and immune-compromised kids could get the flu from exposure to flumist, however, if your dd is immunologically normal she should be fine, and if she's fine I don't THINK she can pass along the flu to anyone else (like the immuno-compromised people you mentioned), but don't quote me on that. That probably doesn't make you feel better...sorry! Hope Dd is feeling good!

I was worried about the same thing at the same time of the year last year, except we were living with my sister when she got Flumisted. Luckily no one got the flu including DD even though she was constantly kissing & playing with my sister. Whatever it is, she's been exposed or not, what's done is done, there is no use worrying about it- I only say that because I wasted a ton of energy worrying about it last year and nothing happened. Give her plenty of vitamin C, or if you're nursing take it yourself.

Thanks for the quick responses!
I'm going to load all of us up on vit C tomorrow. DD fell asleep in the car on the way home, so I didn't even get to wash her hands. Sigh.

BIL only got the mist b/c a particularly aggressive physician relative came over and was shocked and appalled that no one in DH's family had been vaxed against the flu. This relative went out and somehow got a bunch of vaxes, and came back and gave it to all of them. All of this happened just before we arrived on the scene.

I'm so relieved we weren't there when he was there misting everyone, b/c it would have been a giant fight--we keep our vax decisions private, but would have had to say a loud and clear NO. :
