anyone "no shampoo" care their hair? - Page 3

i want to hop onto the no-poo bandwagon.
i have fine, straight chin length hair.
i would like to have as little ick-stage as possible, so i want to make sure i do this right.

1 tbsp bs, diluted into 1 cup warm water. massage into scalp.

rinse with 1 tsp acv diluted into 1 cup warm water.

so here are my questions.

1. how often should i start out with the bs scrub? just see how my hair feels and go from there?

2. other recipes call for 1 tbsp acv to 1 cup water, and pp's have said that's too much, so would 1 tsp to 1 cup water be sufficient?

3. how often should i rinse with acv?

4. so i understand, i will scrub with the bs, but not rinse it out with water like i would regular 'poo, right? i would only rinse with the acv occasionally. i would assume that by leaving the bs in, it would dry and absorb some of the excess yuck on my scalp?

5. between "washings" i can wash wo, or is it better to just leave the bs alone.

6. if i decide to occasionally oil the ends of my hair, what is the best to use? i use jojoba on the rest of my body but feel like maybe something not quite as "waxy" would be better in this instance.

sorry for all the questions - i just want to do this right, and my hair gets really icky really quickly.

I tried to switch to no poo several times over a few years. My hair never got out of the nasty stage though. I think I was using way too much bs and acv too. Finally last year it responded wonderfully to it! I had been using california baby for quite a while before that. Now I'm using 1 T BS to 1 C warm water. No ACV. My hair is so clean and thick and I don't have the scalp itchies anymore. The BS does strip my red color very badly though.

I've gone water/boar bristle brush only with my kids and that works great for them. Sally beauty supply has 100% boar bristle brushes for less than $4.

i've been trying the no poo thing on and off for a few months... needless to say my hair was a GREASY mess!!! never left that "nasty stage"... although my hair was softer then its ever been, and it dried in no time. these were the things that i LOVED about no poo.
Christmas day i decided to break out some henna i bought a few months back and do my hair. well it was SUPPOSE to go brown, but i look like i've stolen Ronald Mcdonald's lovely wig... ok not that bad, but when you don't like red hair on yourself it feels that bad!!! it also dried my hair out which was not something that i was hoping for, BUT i was able to go back to no poo without a problem. instead of using BS to wash my hair, and on a desperate whim to get my hair back to brown, i started using my coffee grinds to wash my hair.
I add a drop of TTO to the grounds to get rid of the itchies that i was getting, and thus so far my hair is clean, and darkening! i have yet to go back to the ACV cause my hair does tend to get greasy, but am going to try it again since my hair is a little dry.
i've also tried the egg (white and yolk) in my hair and it made it very soft, its a little messy though. its worth it to me cause i don't like using the chemicals in my hair, or on my body.
i wash my hair with the coffee grounds about once a week, and whats left over goes into the garden! so either way its a win win situation
good luck to you with the no poo!

Today is my first day of no-poo. I used 1 tablespoon of baking soda and mixed it with very warm water into a paste. Massaged it in, used 2 tbs ACV with water to rinse the ends. The hair on my crown feels so very soft! I hope I skip the greasy ickies, we shall see soon enough.

I'm one week no-poo WO with an ACV rinse twice this week. Also used a fresh infusion rosemary rinse a few days ago. Hair feels fine. A little greasy right at the crown, but I felt a bit greasy on top before I showered and only the very crown is greasy now so I think I might have missed a spot with the rinse.

Looking good so far though. I've been brushing really well a couple of times a day also to move the oils down.

I haven't used shampoo in 2+ years. I haven't used conditioner in a year. Once a week I apply a mask of rhassoul clay mixed with rose water to my face, scalp, and hair. I massage it in for a few minutes and then rinse everything off when it feels dry on my face.

Any other shower I manage to get in I do water only. I just comb my hair when it is wet and let it air dry.

I don't think anyone has mentioned a shower filter. I would say it is the first thing you should get if you are trying to go all natural and reduce product use. Chlorine is so bad for you, and minerals in well water can do crazy things to your hair. I was able to drop the conditioner and skin moisturizer when we got a shower filter.

I've been using baking soda and ACV since the spring, and I've been really happy with it. I used to have flyaway hair, and used products to keep it smooth, and I've totally cut them out since I started no-pooing. Also, after a few days of not washing, my scalp used to get unbearably itchy. No more. It will get kind of greasy-looking after about four days, but never the itch that used to drive me crazy.

I couldn't do the BS but I either use homemade shampoo or a shampoo bar and that's an acceptable compromise for me

I tried washing my hair with egg and ended up cooking the egg in my hair while rinsing it out. It took along time to brush all the egg out of my hair

okay, i'm gonna need some encouragement here.

when i was using the clay, my hair looked and felt great but it stripped the color from my roots. i have silver hair and it's colored darker...

so i went to WO and ACV/rosemary rinse. 10 days later my roots are a greasy mess even though i have a boar hair bristle brush and am brushing well to spread the oils. i have fine long hair and it's getting kind of gross, really.

is there any alternative to clay or BS for the washing part - other than a shampoo bar or soap or shampoo? soap and shampoo bars made my hair waxy. looked great; felt like a candle...

i'm inching toward the shampoo...stop me...ughhh, my hair is really icky! lol HELP!

My hair is looking icky too, the roots are just fine, but the length of it is greasy and stringy! I'm supposed to go out tomorrow to a charity function, I will try to just put my hair up, but if I look like a greasball, I'll probably wash it with Dr. Bronner's :

I'd like to know how Dr. Bronner's works compared to other soaps.

How long did you try it for? And did you combine it with the ACV?
Most people on shampoo bars go through an adjustment phase and using an ACV rinse after rinsing off the shampoo bar really has done well for me although when I started I had the icky, waxy feeling.
yeah, the acv didn't really stop the waxy buildup.

oh, and i only did it about 2 weeks before i gave up and washed my hair with shampoo to get the "wax" out. it was fine with the clay but had to switch the second week to just a touch of soap.

Just adding my no-poo story here, so that it may help someone else.
I have very thick curly hair, that if brushed gets frizzy.

Probably 2 years ago I started looking into the no poo. I experimented with the bs and acv rinse, and put jojoba w/ lavendar oil on it whilst damp.

After playing around with differing variations ( I also got 16" cut off my hair in May ) I now use just conditioner. I add a little bit of bs to the conditioner if my hair is dirty, but mainly if I have the time / remember it, and very occasionally do the rinse too. I finish off w/ the jojoba oil mix too, and I love it. No frizz, and lovely and curly.
I don't tell many people that I don't use shampoo as I am afraid of the reaction, yk? Quite sad really, but i do love how my hair is now.

Hi Taedareth,

I just tried this in my husband's hair (mine doesn't need washing just yet). After pouring the acv (solution with 1 part acv/9 parts water) over his hair, I didn't rinse it out. Is that the way it's supposed to be done? Also, I dissolved a tbsp of bs in a large container of warm water. How much water should I use for 1 tbsp of bs?

Thanks. I've been reading this thread and am excited to try it.

I am in my first week without shampoo or conditioner. My hair is long and straight, and tended towards oily. With the bs and acv it hasn't been greasy at all. It feels great! I never thought I could get away with not using conditioner since my hair is long and tends to get tangled. But it is easy to brush! I am so excited that I won't have to buy expensive hair products anymore.
