S/O: Washable Bean Bag Filler? (The tossing kind this time.)

I'm making some bean bags as a gift for a friend's child. I'm knitting them using some leftover cotton yarn from a previous project, and keeping the filler inside with sections of an old pair of tights. I made one for DS as a practice run, and after playing with it for just an afternoon, I can see that if possible, I should make these things washable. (My practice one is filled with rice.) Anyone have any ideas for a filler that would be a washable and preferably natural material?

How about if you just make the cover removable?

That was my thought too. In fact, I'm working on a second "practice" one now, which will be envelope-style so the middle can be taken out. Hopefully it will work out and be gift beanbag #1 instead of practice beanbag #2.

I wonder if perlite (puffed rock used in potted plants) or aquarium gravel might work? I think removable covers are a great idea, though.

Oh, one more idea. Maybe small buttons or beads? You could probably find small glass beads. Not sure how much $$, though.

OT back atcha, Woody was my older daughter's fave when she was a baby. His voice would help her calm down and stop crying and she was very high needs!

I'm making some for my girls stocking and I was thinking of using beads.

Good idea on the beads.

What size would you use?

I was thinking pony beads since I have so many not being used. I'm in the middle of making it now so I'll let you know how it worked out!

I haven't checked this thread for a while - thanks for all the suggestions! Beads! Of course!

I like the way the removable cover turned out, but I haven't filled it yet. I thought I'd use rice again and sew up a little muslin "bag" for it. I think I'll go ahead with that plan because it adds another play possibility to the beanbags - taking off and putting the covers back on! (They're for a one-year-old.)

Thanks - I hope all of your beanbags come out nicely!

I forgot to come back after using the pony beads. They worked out really well! I definitely like it better than the rice and now it's washable too
