o, here's my situation...

I'm a Type II diabetic, on insulin for the pregnancy with good control. My OB is basically planning on my having a cesarean because I've had two, and I "have to" have another. I only see her for the management of my diabetes really.

My last two pregnancies, one of which ended in miscarriage, the other I opted to have a c-section with, I've been able to find midwives willing to attend my births at home. With my son, at the last minute my midwife and I both had a bad feeling about the home birth idea and we opted against it. That was 6 years ago, and I haven't been able to get in touch with that midwife. The midwife I'd hired with my last pregnancy (in 2006- that ended in miscarriage) is willing to attend my birth this time, but she scares me. She's been working lately, not as a midwife, but as a sex worker. She tends to disappear for weeks at a time, and had I not miscarried last time, she wouldn't have been there for the birth as she was in jail.... though she might be better than having an unassisted birth- and she's quite knowledgeable about pregnancy and diabetes.

I'm only 12 weeks pregnant, so I know I have some time to try to find a midwife, and I'm working on it. I've posted here looking for one, but haven't had any luck in actually hiring a midwife.

I know that attending my birth is a scary prospect... but I'm hoping there's someone willing to take the risk. Though I'm trying to figure what to do if I simply cannot find a midwife.

What I'm wondering is what some of you knowledgeable mamas would do in my position. I see three options.

Going to the hospital basically means that I have to show up and fight them and refuse a c-section, and I don't know that I'm up for that fight.

I can have an unassisted birth. Being diabetic and thusly running a higher risk for complications like shoulder dystocia, and some other problems- this doesn't feel right. Additionally, I've never given birth, so I that makes the process seem like an even worse idea.

Finally, I could just schedule the darn c-section. The thought of which makes me feel absolutely sick to my stomach.

Additionally- I'm in Oakland, Ca. If anyone knows a midwife that might be interested in helping me out- send them my way!
