Mittens!

Most of us probably subscribe to LC- well- I made 2 pairs of the mittens in the last issue and they are fabulous! I really wanted to share how I changed it though.... I knit the cuffs out of superwash wool and knit them directly to the regular to-be-felted mitten. Then once I had the knit I felted the whole dang thing at once. They turned out awesome! Nice stretchy cuffs- and completely washable! Perfect for toddlers! Also- the childs small is almost small enough for my almost 2 year old-I made one set a titch smaller and they are perfect!

I am going to needle felt on them yet (hopefully)- so once I have that done I will post a pic.

Show us!! I had the same thought when I read the pattern. I even have some superwash that I could use. Did you happen to make some small ones? My 2 1/2 dd needs mitts, and these are so nice, but the pattern is too big for a toddler, I think.

If your 2.5 year old is as big as my almost 2 year old you will be fine. I just felted my DS's mittens and they are about the perfect size! I made my kid's mittens out of lamb's pride superwash and cascade220 for the felted part. They are 4.25" long+ cuffs. I made a 2.5" cuff. I want to needle felt on them before I post a pic.

Thank You

I am so grateful that you like my mittens! I often use a double strand of sock yarn (much, much better than superwash worsted) for the cuffs- I really like the little bit of nylon it in - makes the mittens last longer.

Thank you so much for the compliments,

I had no idea you were an MDC mama! They should put that in the bio when they print the patterns

I never ever thought to use double sock yarn- that would have been way better (since I have so many odd remnants of it). Well- ya know.... I need some mittens too- I will have to try that out!

MDC Grandma

Yep- I'm the grandma who sewed snaps on 14 dozen diapers because my daughter didn't like diaper pins! I follow these forums because I feel really strongly about natural fibers, foods, living and all of you are so encouraging to me.

How nice to see you here! Your pattern is lovely, and I'm looking forward to reading your blog. I was wondering, was difficult to match the color pattern on the mitten pairs?

Thanks-
Truth be told- sometimes I fuss with 'matching' in Kureyon and sometimes I just use it off the ball. It doesn't offend me either way. If you want the stripes to be close from one mitten to the other the trick is to make careful note of where you cast on. Say for example, cast on the first mitten right at the beginning of the hot pink (or whatever) color change. Then if you cast on for the second mitten at the same place the stripes will be close acrossed the pair. Honestly though when matching the stripes is a big deal choose a machine (computer) generated color change yarn like Universal's Long Print or Paintbox not Noro in which the color changes are actually done by human beings. That's part of why I love Noro yarn- humans actually do this work - makes it more earthy for me.
