Anyone have a recommendation for online home library cataloging software?

We've grown beyond my abilities to keep track. Plus I think it would be fun to organize the books more.

I'd love BTDT recommendations for not wildly expensive software to keep track of the books.

In the library thing, the data is stored on their server rather than locally...is that right?

I've been burnt a time or two with on-line only services of various kinds....tell me there is a local storage option!

I think you can downlaod your catalog after you have entered it....

I love library thing too.

Although if you want it stored on your computor you can also make an excel or regular txt file.

Did y'all get the bar code scanner or enter the ispn's by hand....?

Ooo....and I figured out the cvs export option!

I haven't bought the barcode scanner, I just ended up doing my library in stages and entered by titles. I buy most of my books from amazon so I just opened their webpage and looked at my account purchases as a reference.

I entered everything by hand. It didn't really take all that long. I did a shelf at a time. Took me a couple of days.

Yup me too, and I didn't do ISBNs I did it by title.

For those who use library thing, why are you cataloging your books? Do you have an enormous amount that you simply forget what you have or is there another purpose for creating such a list?

Um....for fun!?! OK- I love having them organized and it IS fun, but I also do it because I do have a lot and continue to acquire. I keep them tagged by reading level, as well as keep track who has had what as a RA and who has read what as a IR. Right now I only have our Fiction from the 1000 good book list entered in (and because of the blogger widget my blog shows what we are currently reading) but I plan on entering and TAGGING our teaching resources and non fiction library as well to help me remember what I have stuffed in the back of the shelf for Greek History even though that is some months away. Oh, and did I mention- it's fun? The OCD in me LOVES my cataloged library. It gives me warm fuzzy feelings.....

At recent count, I have around 900 books. I keep track of who has read what, who has borrowed what, things to be read, and in general, what I have!!

If we are studying Egypt I can click on the Egypt tag and have an instant list of what books I already have.

When DS reads a book I add a tag with his name to the book. Then I can get an instant list at the end of the year.

And you won't believe how many duplicate books I found after I cataloged them all!!!

Oh, I also wanted to add that it makes it a ton easier for my friends to find out what I have and for me to find out what we have.

That beats my 345 by far...once you add in our non-fiction which isn't cataloged yet I'd be close to 550 I bet. We use the library mostly for non fiction and teaching resources though. And with my book worm I try to keep our fiction selection expanding..,
