My nephew got pneumonia from CP. He is not immunocompromised.

That being said, I am not getting the vax for my dd and she is temporarily at a daycare where there is a health notice for CP. I am leery of her getting it now as she is just over 19 months. I want her to get it at around 3 or 4.

Our ped told us that now is the perfect time for DS to contract chicken pox. He's just over 19mo. My husband had it around 19mo and had all of two spots, yet it was sufficient to build immunity.

I had it at 16. My first pockmarks weren't from acne, but chicken pox. They've long since faded, of course.

My sister called me about two months ago and said her kids were exposed to chickenpox. I read up on it here and told about cod liver oil and vitamin C. She immediately started giving her kids cod liver oil twice daily and bought vitamin c and let her kids eat it like candy.

Her kids all got it, but two of them had almost no blisters and none of them even itched. Two had a fever for one day, all them got over it fine in less than a week.

They got it from my brothers kids who didn't do the clo or vitamin c. My brothers kids got it much worse and were really itchy.

Definitely check out the threads on vitamin c and cod liver oil.

I second the vote for C and CLO. DS got three spots on Tuesday, about a hundred on Wednesday and hasn't had any new ones since. He had no fever, itched quite a bit for one day and today almost all blisters have scabbed over. It's been very easy. He has been drinking SA water all week and I doubled his CLO. The only other thing I gave him was homeopathic Sulphur, one dose when he was at his itchiest.

You don't have to answer this, but many children who have normal immune systems are at a greatly increased risk of developing complications from CP if they're given fever/pain reducers like ibuprofen. It's very important not to mediate children with CP; besides things like oatmeal baths of course.

I haven't read any of the other replies, but here is my experience.

I had the chicken pox and some measles. My brother had the chicken pox and some measles.

My kids...they both have had the MMR because they go to public school. Neither had the chicken pox vaccine. It was, at that time, not required and I didn't want them to have the vaccine anyway.

About 4 years ago, there was a big outbreak of chicken pox in the gradeschool, and even the kids who were vaxed for chicken pox GOT the chicken pox and spread the chicken pox.

So...I take ds#2 to the doctor to confirm he has chicken pox. The doc says good deal, your kid has chicken pox, now he will have life-long immunity. He said he did NOT want his kid to get the chicken pox vaccine, but his wife insisted on it. He said they still don't know how long the vaccine will work AND that vaccinated kids are still getting and spreading the chicken pox.

However, if your child has immune system problems, that changes everything maybe. I don't know for sure, since both my kids have healthy immune systems so far.

Oh, and ds#1...he has had some mystery rashes, may have been chicken pox, don't know....doctor in those towns didn't know cuz I am guessing none of them have SEEN chicken pox.

When ds#2 got the chicken pox, ds#1 did not get it, so I am guessing he has had it before and it was a very mild case and we just didn't know he had it.

When ds#2 got the chicken pox about 4 years ago and lots of his classmates who were vaccinated got the chicken pox, there was no push to vaccinate the kids.

Now, however, we just recently got a note that said it is a requirement from the state to have your children vaccinated against chicken pox if they are in public school, unless your kid has already HAD the chicken pox and I had to give them a date he had them...

I wrote a little note at the bottem that during the 4th grade chicken pox breakout that most of the kids who GOT chicken pox and were spreading it around HAD been vaccinated, so not so sure the vaccine is doing that much good.

But what do I know.

It's just not good timing for her now as she is just getting over a cold that included a brief fever. I would rather her be well. Also, for such a young child, it would be a lot harder to convince them to not scratch. If they are a bit older, there is more chance to convince them to not scratch and leave scars.

Ime, it's much easier for a younger child to not scratch.

We were getting measles vaxes too, but my brothers and I still all got the measles. I remember people telling us "You're lucky you didn't die." and my mom looking at them like they were crazy and saying something like "You do realize it was once considered a mild childhood illness right? I had measles, didn't you? Do you actually KNOW anyone that died from measles when WE were little?"
We all had CP as well and I think the vax for it is absolutely friggin' ridiculous, *especially* making it mandatory. : Give me a friggin' break. Next thing, we'll be vaxing for the common cold and heaven forbid we get it, it could kill us!

Keep in mind that the cp vax is causing many young children to develop shingles When dd was in 1st grade there where at least 5 cases of shingles in Pre K and K considering the no one but old people and very immunocomprimised people ever got shingles before the cp vax came out it tells me all I need to know about the cp vax.

Unfortunately when dd was little I let a Dr. bully me into giving the cp vax because of her severe eczema he told me if she got it she would end up in the hospital so I caved. Before that appt. I was adamet she wouldnt get that vax because having had cp I knew it was no big deal but with her ski issues brought up I lost my confidence. Now I get to worry for the next XX years if she will still be immune or if she might develop shingles.

My dd has a fully natural immune system while ds has had much of the vaccine schedule before we stopped.
He had the cp vax at 1 yr and when he was about 3 he got an itchy rash that worsened in warm water and showed up mainly on his trunk and under his armpits. We don't know if it was cp but it had all of the symptoms. He was itchy and sort of under the weather for about two days. I would rather that he never had the shot; especially if he was just going to get the disease anyway.
I'm keeping my eyes opened for cp outbreaks around here so I can get K exposed. She just hit 18 mos.
I thought I heard something on the news last night but I didn't catch it until the tail end. All I know is that kids were lining up at elem. schools in the evening to get vaxed. I don't know for what.

Yeah. My toddler has the worst looking mosquito bites in the summer, but has yet to figure out that scratching is an option. Whereas when I have an itch, all I can think about is getting my nails on it.

I think it's ridiculous that schools and parents are freaking over cp. Like Gitti said cp will be the next deadly disease you need to be vaxed for, social engineering. My lot had cp last year ages 9,11 and 15, quite late really. I was relieved they'd got it at last. So they were all coming down with it and at home all the time. During that time my 11 yr old dd who has a dyslexic diagnosis started reading books on her own for the first time, she read Harry Potter, she hasn't looked back since and according to her english teacher reads books well above her age range and with quite mature( not that kind lol) content. My son got hardly any spots but dd's were just covered. Darn uncomfortable, I was up often in night with them.I bought colloidal silver in spray form, pricey but really helpful. It's anti-viral and soothing.Plenty vits and good food.

When I had CP at age six I got a skin infection in a very uncomfortable place and had to take abx but it still wasn't really a big deal. I was more upset about missing my school Valentine's day party than the stinging while I peed.
