Dr. William Sears

I will start this by saying I love Dr. Sears. However I just bought one of his books for my sil, The Baby Book. I agree with most of what he says, but he really aggrivates me on the vaccine issue. He basically makes it sound like parents decide not to vaccinate because they are uninformed. I'm confused on this because I thought he had his own selective vaccine schedule. I think he is a very smart man and felt he probably did his research well. Now, I'm doughting him. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Also because I am sending this to my sil, do you know of any other drs. that are not for vaccines that I can send her a link to? I think Dr. Jay Gordon is against them, but I could be wrong. I personally don't need a dr. to convince me, but I think she does. To each his own.

You're confusing WIlliam Sears with Bob Sears. William Sears is very pro-vax. Bob Sears, his son, is more selective.

I thought Bob Sears was the one on the Drs. show. If so I am almost positive that when they had a show about vaccines he was saying people should vax. I didn't watch the show, but that was the impression I got from here. Now I'm really confused.

Yes, Bob is the one on the show and he is pro-vax, but in a more selective schedule. He is also more accepting of those who are non-vaxers than his father.

Dr. Jim Sears is on the Drs. show.

Oh my my how confusing this can get when so many of your kids are drs.
I am still confused how Dr. William Sears can be so pro-vax. Any thoughts on that?

There are plenty of MD's out there that caution people about vaccines whether they are totally anti-vax or support a delayed schedule. Dr. Joseph Mercola is one who is anti-vax http://www.mercola.com
Dr. Stepahnie Cave supports delayed vaxing. She wrote a book "What your docotr may not tell you about childhood vaccinations". Dr. Sherri Tenpenny is anti-vax and has written a lot of stuff http://www.nmaseminars.com/index.html

It's a big leap, mentally and socially, to not vaccinate at all, and it seems to place a lot of responsibility on the parents. I say "seems to" because it's assumed that vaccinated kids won't get vaccine-available diseases which clearly isn't the case, but parents aren't expected to know what to do if a vaccine fails. But I, for one, expect my kids (and probably me too) to get many of the VADs, so I want to be prepared. It's a significant step toward moving responsibility for one's own health and one's children's health to the parent/individual and that could be an uncomfortable direction to go in.

And I think he's focused on other, definitely worthwhile, battles, along the lines of breastfeeding and AP parenting and such. Especially as a professional, you can't fight all the battles all the time.

I read the book also and the only two things I remember that I really didn't agree on were the vaccination and circumcision sections.
If you want to send a Sears/AP book to your SIL, how about Sears Attachment Parenting book? I have not read it myself but I don't think it has as much 'health' stuff as the Baby book. Maybe someone else will know.

Dr. Jay Gordon is middle-of-the-road. I really like his DVD a lot, although there are more reasons I am wary of vaccines than what he goes into on the video, but he does have a lot of good info on there including nutrition and breastfeeding. I highly recommend it.

There is also this doc in Chicago that doesn't vax his patients, and they have much less asthma and allergy problems, and I think no autism either: http://www.homefirst.com/

This has quotes from docs (you'd have to verify): http://www.care2.com/c2c/share/detail/529621

Doc who spoke out against mercury in vaccines: http://www.ageofautism.com/2008/08/dr-frank-engley.html

Pharmacist against the flu vax (remember they have a lot of medical training also): http://www.ageofautism.com/2008/10/pharmacist-on-f.html

Marnica has a good list in her post here: http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=995169

Hope that helps. It DOES help people to know that there are docs out there who are anti-vax, vax wary, and OK with S/D.
