i have a strange question...

was wondering if you can bring knitting needles on a plane.

will be flying this weekend and was planning on bringing some knitting with me (instead of a book as i am wont to do). just wondering if knitting needles are allowed. i've never tried it before. i'd hate to have them confiscated at the gate.

I think that the only place you absolutely can NOT have needles is in London. I would take bamboo dpns if it was me. Those look the most unassuming.

DH and I went to Brazil last winter and I knit the entire time we were waiting in the airport and on the 5 million flights we took. I took socks because they are so small- take so long- and can be done on bamboo dpns.

have fun- and I wouldn't take scissors if I were you.

I the last few years, I have flown with knitting needles several times. I have not tried to take them on the international flights I've been on though, only domestic flights. There's a website with the regulations -- I'll see if I can dig it up. My recollection is that you can NOT bring metal needles, only plastic or bamboo. You can bring circulars, but there is a maximum length on them.

The actually say you could bring blunt pointed scissors! I've never even tried to bring scissors. I just break the yarn, saw through it with one of the plastic knives they give you with your food, or leave it attached until I get to my destination.

I've flown with both straights and dpns in metal and had no issues (domestic only.) I've also taken scissors, sharp ones, but under five inches in length. I did read a good piece of advice to take a SASE with you, so that if they don't let you through (but they should) you can mail the needles back to yourself instead of dumping them.

Also, the first few times I flew with them, I printed out the page from the TSA and took it in my carry on to have proof that I was allowed to fly with them.
