Target's new incorrect price policy - Page 2

I was at Target a few weeks ago and had something similar happen. I had 3 separate items that the actual price was few dollars more on each item at the register than on the shelf tag. I asked about it at the checkout and they told me that they are only allowed to charge whatever it rings up as. I would have thrown a complete fit about it but I had a crying baby in arms and a toddler trying to make a dash out the door. :

When I had told the guy "I really don't that is fair" he had said "Well, do you want to not get them at all, or get them for the price that is ringing up. Those are the options". I am totally avoiding shopping there at the moment, it really pissed me off! I ended up just paying full price

Per the dept of weights and measures they MUST sell the item for what the shelf price /advertised price is. If it rings up wrong they MUST change it to the advertisted price.
This is so true. I bet it's a store policy to OFFER you the 10% thing first and see if you'll take it.

I've worked in retail and sometimes you get checkers who a. never learn the real policy and b. take it all very personally and act like you're taking money out of THEIR pocket or c. just can't be bothered with you, hope you'll move along because it's time for them to go home or on a break (not all retail people are like this, not by any stretch). Always always always ask for a manager if something doesn't sound right to you.

Wow. I can be so confrontational in person, and I would have said "Option C." And then paid for the items, then taken a photo of the wrong sign(s) and showed it to the manager and asked if he would like to get the AG or the Dept of Weights involved, or resolve this properly?

Wow that is really shady to advertise one price and charge another. I wonder how many people don't notice at all or don't notice until they get home and don't want to waste gas money driving back? I don't see how this has anything to do with the Britax thing. The online sales have their own separate policies.

I work at target and that isn't the policy at all. If someone disputes a price, we are required to give them the disputed price as long as it seems like a reasonable price. If it doesn't seem reasonable, then we are required to call in a manager. Reasonable would be within $20 or so of the original price. I'm sorry you had such crappy service. Not all targets suck.

I'm as skeptical as anyone, and I agree that it's unfair to mark items at the incorrect price. I also think advertised prices should be honoured. However, I don't have any conspiracy theories about Lee Scott sneaking in the back door, purposely lowering tag prices while allowing items to ring up at a higher price at the cash register

Many times, workers are poorly paid, taken advantage of, and don't have time to do it all. I suppose what this means is that I don't begrudge the workers (usually) for incorrectly marked prices, and I also don't think I'm sticking it to the man by getting the advertised price. I feel like I can point out the error, get the advertised price, and move on. It's not a huge deal to me.

I have also noticed inconsistencies with pricing at Target.

A couple of months ago they had some Bum Genuis diapers that were mismarked and they gave me the marked price.

I've never had trouble getting the advertised prices. I'll usually ask them to go look at the sign and they've always said "We have to honor the price on the sign".

Yeah, that is what it is all about, sticking it to the man.

Let me spell it out since my point obviously flew over your head. I had $10-15 to spend on a memory card. I picked the largest capacity memory card in my budget based on the price tags on the shelf. When it didn't ring up at the price on the shelf I pointed out my error and the CS person said I was SOL when in the past they honored the price on the sticker.

Now I am trying to determine whether to break my lifetime boycott of Walmart because (in this area) they are less scammer-ish. Either Target has a policy to honor the shelf price or they don't but either way they should be able to detail their policy. Hell, Whole Foods' policy is printed in black and white and on display when you checkout.

The man (not walmart) has provided quite well for my family over the years. You are barking up the wrong tree if you think this is all to stick it to the man.

Oh, and I came back to post that DH went to Target to buy a birthday gift for DD's friend. It was one price on the shelf and rang up at a different price. He mentioned it to the cashier and she just took off the $2 without verifying. So either I got unlucky with who I dealt with, it was due to the bigger price difference or it was because we went to different Targets.

-DH goes to the one that is slightly closer to our house and I went to the one in the poorer neighborhood that has better deals. We live about 1/2 way between them but slightly closer to the one in the better neighborhood. ETA: There seems to be a lot of errors lately with the Target scanner.

boo target

i have 2 complaints about target!

#1 their free $5.00 "GIFT CARD" promotion is a bunch of BS!
i saw in the sunday paper they had a deal to buy 2 starbucks bags of coffee and you get a free $5.00 gift card. nothing else was printed except a PICTURE! of a GIFT CARD! so i go to target to buy my delicious coffee. at the checkout i get the two bags, and do i get a gift card? nope. i get a printed on receipt paper coupon! i died inside. i was so mad. it was a $5.00 coupon! for more stinking coffee! they not only lied about the gift card, it was already DESIGNATED for what i had to use it on! what the crud? i asked the cashier and she just looked at me like move along i have a line.

#2 we bought a cosleeper for ds boy was i dumb for that, he just slept on a pillow a lot more comfortable, anyway, i had the receipt still, it was within the time to return it, it was still in the box but had been opened. i go to return it and the girl says to me "its opened, theres a 20% decrease in your refund"............ are you joking? i said "it says no where on the receipt or in your return policy, the one hanging up behind your head, nothing about that.." to which she said "i can return it, but minus the 20%", i asked for a manager and she did the same thing! so i gave her a big long speech about how i worked in retail for 7 years almost, 5 of them being in management, and that i would never let a customer leave as angry as i was about to, its bad for business and you will most certainly get a complaint, and she ended up giving me back my full refund, but this is after 45 minutes of arguing/waiting!

i love targets stuff, but i swear, the gift card promo(cough, lie, cough) really broke me as a customer.

as for the britax thing, that was a load of bs. they needed to honor that. just because it was not in front of a persons face makes it ok to retract a price? no.

and OP for getting the advertised price!

OT a little, but Dh once bought me some earrings. After spending hours picking them out, he went to pay the $75 on the sign. The till rang up $750. He was shocked, and very nicely, but disappointedly, told the girl to put them back. The manager came over, and insisted on selling him the earrings for $75, even though dh felt bad and asked if anyone would get into trouble.

The funny thing was that I'd asked for inexpensive earrings because I was sick of losing good ones. The $75 was way more than I'd meant dh to spend, but I ended up with some worth $750. I never felt comfortable wearing them for everyday - whcih had been the idea, so they went into the safe with my other good jewellery. But they are beautiful!

This is absolutely not Target's policy - the team member and manager you spoke with are fools. Sorry that happened. There is a guest comment card that should be available at all cash registers - you should call it and talk to someone about what happened. Then the rep you speak with contacts the Store Team Leader - the head honcho you wouldn't be able to get in touch with yourself. If you have the team members names they will ensure they know the correct policy.

I'm going to have to agree. I've shopped at every WM in this island. ANd more often than not, I've bene pleasantly surprised because an item I bought was on clearance, and much less than I was going to pay for originally, but wasn't marked on clearance (like a pair of $.20 shoes for my kid ).

And OP, that is considered false advertising. Here that's met with a $10k fine for every infraction.

False Advertising in LA

If you’ve been overcharged

If you were overcharged, report it to the salesclerk right away. If the salesclerk can’t help you, ask to speak to a manager. By law, you only have to pay the lowest advertised, posted or quoted price offered by the store. Even if the posted price has expired, the store must honor it.
