Xanthan Gum - I thought is was always corn????

Yet I see that Namaste sugar free pancake and waffle mix has it and yet says it's a corn free product. I've been rejecting items with xanthan gum without questions but it seems as if it can be something other than corn? Please help.

Xanthum gum is usually grown on corn. Namaste is the only company I know that doesn't use the corny one.

Has anyone found out what their Xanthan Gum *is* grown on?

Corn? I had no idea. Is there some master list of things to avoid when you can't have corn?

The Namaste stuff is grown on molasses. I don't know of any other company that sources that, but it has got to be somewhere...

you know whats weird? My DD can tolerate xanathan gum. I mean me eating it obviously since shes 5 months. But she can't even tolerate regular salt because of the corn. Is that strange? She seems so sensitive in some senses but she tolerates that just fine....

There is corn-safe vanilla out there... you just have to watch out for all the bad stuff. And vanillin is made from wood creosote- nasty. Two safe brands of vanilla are Vanilla from Tahiti and the Frontier brands.

The corn-free products website I use says that Namaste's xanthan gum is grown on wheat and then tested for gluten and all other protein.

is the frontier brand safe? i knew about vanilla from tahiti, but had read that frontier vanilla wasn't safe. just curious, because frontier is readily available to me, but i don't want to trial it and react!

No clue on the Frontier vanilla, but I know that they say not to use their spices if you can't have gluten either, so it wouldn't surprise me if the vanilla wasn't safe either.

The stuff I have right now is Nielsen-Massey Vanillas, Inc. I was out and grabbed it at the grocery store since it was at least GMO free and organic. Madagascar Vanilla is what it says.

FWIW, I don't recall having any problems when I was using the Frontier vanilla though. That doesn't necessarily mean anything though.

I just called Frontier and they said that their vanilla is corn based.

Oh that's really crummy about the Namaste Their own website says molasses though -- or at least it did, so it might be worth looking into further.

You have to be super super reactive to react to corn alcohol. It does not bother us AFAIK -- just of course avoiding the cheap stuff with corn syrup added. It's really inexpensive to make your own vanilla - vanilla bean + potato vodka + time... but that doesn't really help for this holiday season.
