Cheap weatherization ???

Last year I scored a bunch of the plastic window covering kits for a dollar a piece, so most windows have that... then dd and I made the things for the doors .... long noodly like bags filled with beans to keep the air from coming under the doors... then dh filled in the basement windows with styrofoam and extra insullation.... so that is done too. What else can we do to keep the cold out and the warmth in???

Oh, I am working on making some flannel linners for some of the windows that let in too much cold.... cut up a few old sheets and blankets.

I really like this book: Insulate and weatherize by Bruce Harley. http://www.amazon.com/Insulate-Weath...8626714&sr=8-1

Sealing plumbing penetrations, band joist and drywall gaps at the attic level are all very important. A lot of this is just caulk and elbow grease. The book explains all!

Our apartment has drafty windows from the forties! For several of them we didn't need light from, DH bought insulation boards, cut them to fit and caulked them in. Now the windows are better insulated than the surrounding walls . . .

When it's time to move, we'll pull them out then use a razor knife to remove the caulk.
