What if...

DS is sick tonight... he is 9 months old and has vomited 7 times in the last 3 hours. I'm hoping he'll be okay... but I got to wondering, what if he gets overly dehydrated and we have to take him to the ER. What if they want to catheterize him and think they have to retract him to do so? Even if I don't have to take him in this time... what if I have to take him at any time and they need to catheterize him and try to retract him to do so? I'm sure that if I told them not to retract, they'd just say, "well we have to to do this procedure." What information can I arm myself with?

oops... he's vomited 8 times now.

First aviod the cath in the first place, it is rarely needed. If they just want a sample they can tape a baggy on him. So start off by saying "no."

If there is an actual need for a cath and the ER nurse claims retraction is necessary, then ask for a NICU nurse or a nurse who went to a foriegn school.

Don't let the nurse try multiple times. If he/she doesn't get it the first time ask for somone else to do it.

: If the bag catch where to show bacteria then they would need to do a cath. to confirm in most cases so you would need to be hypervigulent and be prepaired to remove their hands from your so should the need arise and like pp said only let them try once if she/he cant get it then someone else who knows what they are doing should.
