I really want to make some large shaped crayons like these for some of my kid friends for Christmas. Does anybody know how to do it? Obviously you melt down crayons and pour them into molds, but how do you get them chunky like that, rather than layered? Any ideas?

I haven't done it with crayons, but it's the same principle as for candles...
Let the wax cool a bit so it's not liquid, but more like a caramel consistency, where it will hold it's shape, then you can spoon it into little piles in the mold. Think of it like working with chocolate or butter... it's easiest to do when it's slightly warm and malleable rather than melted or cold. Once you've gotten your piles into the mold, melt down your "base" color and pour it in around and over the rest. You want it to be liquid, but not so hot that it melts the other colors. It will probably be warm enough to melt the edges of the piles so they run together a bit, which is what you want. You'll only get layers if you pour it all when it's liquid.
It may take some trial and error to get it right, but just keep in mind that you can always remelt it and try again.
As for molds, I'd probably look for some fun shaped silicone muffin pans/cups.

Thank you!
I have lots of silicone muffin tins and ice cube trays, as I use them for bath products, so I plan to use those. And I have a TON of old crayons. This is such a great idea!

I do it with not-melted crayons. Take the wrappers off, break them, put them in the muffin tin or cup. Then let them melt slowly in the oven. That gives the chunky look. You have to experiment on how long you let them melt so they don't blend all together.
Or you could melt one color, then pour it over some not-melted. Then your crayon would be mostly one color with accent pieces.

We have found that it works best with Crayola brand crayons. The others have a higher wax to pigment content. We break them up into tiny pieces and put them in the shaped muffin cups according to colors that we like together. Then we put them in the oven that has been preheated. Then, we turn the oven off while they melt. The longer you leave them in, the more blended together they become. Good luck!

I just made some of these tonight! Someone directed me to here http://hyenacart.com/funkylittlemonk...ex.php?p=98439 for directions. I used this mold http://www.amazon.com/Wilton-Mini-St.../dp/B000NNK7Z2
and they came out great
I plan to use them as stocking stuffers.
