if my foot hurts when I walk but not when I run, should I still run?

My foot hurts, just in front of the heel, at the back part of the arch. I don't know exactly why, but I rather suspect it is objecting to the boots I wore to a party the other night. : I didn't go for a run yesterday because I didn't want to wreck it, but this morning I was walking the dog and my DD ran ahead of me and wanted me to run to catch up, so I started running and the darned thing stopped hurting!

So now I think I'd like to go for a run this evening. What do you all think? Good idea? Bad idea?

If it doesn't hurt, I'd run. But pay attention and stop if it hurts.

Maybe you pound on your heel when you walk, but land midfoot or on the ball of your foot when you run. I'd run, but stop if it develops into real pain.

I had this same symptom a couple of years ago. It's called plantar faciitis; in layman's term, overstretch of the muscle in the arch. You may need a different pair of shoes for motion control. Do a lot of foot stretching, ice it if it hurts after a walk.

Good luck.

I was just coming to post an update. I didn't get out last night, but I did this afternoon. And my foot felt fine, then fine when running, then sore again afterwards, but not as bad as it was before. I think it's just bruised from something.

Brooks is right on.

The reason it doesn't hurt when you run is because you are stretching that muscle that runs along the bottom of your foot. It hurts because the muscle is tight.

Either you are are suffering from overuse (which is my case) or you have changed up your workout enough that you are straining this muscle that hadn't been strained before. Also, my doctor also says he sees a lot of this with flip flop wearing. Sometimes too - extra weight will bring this on.....

Freeze a water bottle and roll the bottom of your foot really well. And stretch that muscle!

It's not a bruise. And you are going to make it worse if you don't start treating. It will eventually extend along the entire bottom of your foot!

Not trying to boss you around! Just speaking from experience. Does it hurt worse in the am when you just wake up?

My hubby used to make fun of me because 'my feet didn't work in the morning'. It would take about 3 or 4 minutes of walking to stop limping on my heels. And going down the stairs first thing in the am was yucky!

Well, it's completely fine now. No pain at all, and I've run a couple times this week. Soooooo I'm inclined to think that my foot WAS just pissed about the boots.

lab - sometimes my feet feel a little stiff in the morning, but just on the way TO the bathroom by the time I'm finishes in there I've forgotten that they were stiff. That happened more just after I got my orthotics and it's been decreasing in severity, so I assumed it was simply my feet getting used to the orthotics.
