Anyone know about getting a TDaP while breastfeeding?

I haven't been able to find any info on this. My son is almost two and nurses about 4 times a day. We're thinking of having our next soon, and since we're delaying vaccines I thought we could decrease our chances of bringing home pertussis by having my husband and myself vaccinated. Anyone know about risks of junk getting to my nursling?

The Vaccine does NOT prevent transmission.

Uh Oh, I feel dumb. I don't know what that means. I was thinking that getting the vaccine would keep my husband and I from getting pertussis and bringing it home to the baby, is that not true?

Nope, not true. It just prevents the worst of the cough for you. You can still CATCH it and bring it home and share it with baby.

There was a really long thread on this recently, and I think the bottom line was that the evidence cannot 100% say whether or not the P portion protects against transmission. Some evidence says it can, other evidence says it can't. let me see if I can find the thread.

here it is:

Transmission and protection aside....There is NO WAY I would get any vaccine while breastfeeding. I recently refused the TB test at work because I'm BF. There are no studies stating that that"junk" is not transmiited through breastmilk. IMO it is not worth the risk since the vax is not all that effective and it may not prevent transmission anyway.

interesting...my midwife and her nurse both asked me at my six week appointment (last week) if I had received my DTaP when I was in the hospital right after I had ds was born "b/c you know it's going around!!". The nurse was kind of huffy when i said no, but my midwife was pretty respectful. I guess a routine DTaP is now hospital procedure?? oh yeah, and I was asked if I wanted to get my flu shot then too since she (the nurse) couldn't find it in my record...

Yep, its pretty routine. (The TDaP) I was offered after my ds2 birth. I refused it and the MMR they seem to think I keep needing. (Apparantly, I will never be immune to Rubella)

I had my son in January of 07 and was not offered it then, but when I was looking for info about getting a TDaP while nursing, I read several references that they're recommending a routine TDaP to be given to mothers before discharge.
